Washington, March 13. America's
working men have sent a message to the
people of Russia, urging once more a
strong resistance against Teuton domi
nation. President Samuel Gompors of the
American Federation of Labor, today an
nounced he had spoken by cable to Rus
sia for labor.
The message urges the Russian soviet
to say how America can help; that the
great labor hosts of this country are
willing to extend an assisting hand.
Gompers' cable reads:

"We address yoq in the name of world
liberty. We assure you that tho people
of the United States are pained by every
blow at Russian freedom, as they would
be by a blow at their own. Tho American

C. A. Jewel in City to Look After
Enforcement of Regulation
of Administration.
The closeness, with which the state nf
Oregon is co-operating with the federal
food administration in the matter of en
forcing the food regulations is shown by
tho visit of C. A. Jewell, deputy dairy
and food commissioner, to this city. Mr.
Jowcll, as he expresses it, is here to
glvo tho city the "once over," to see how
the federal regulations arc being observ
ed. He stated Wednesday morning that
he had not as yet made any investiga
tions here, but to judge from tho places
where he droped in to eat tho hotels and
restaurants are obeying the regulations
strictly.
Mr. Jewell will make a detailed exam
ination of tho bakeries and groceries,
mills, hotels, and restaurants, correcting
any misapprehensions as to the laws and
instructing as to the regulations.
This is but the first visit planned, anil
there will only be a checking up, but !f
any violations are found or are persisted
in at the next visit there will be drastic
action taken.
Mr. Jewell stated that A. C. Dixon,
the county food administrator, had found
but little trouble in getting the grocers
and the peoph to comply with tho regu
lations.

Organization Will Take Part in
Parade for Saturday After
noon Liberty Loan Meeting.

tallon was divided into four companies
at drill Tuesday night The were first
divided into squads of eight and given
squad drill in marching for about half an
hour. Then they were lined up in a hoi
low squsre and esch side was designated
as a company, named A, B, C and D. No
officers have as yet been named, but they
will be selected beforo the next drill
night. At that time, Colonel Leader
stated, the men will be given an oppor
tunlry to transfer to some other com
pany, but after that time there will be
no opportunity to change.
After the drill Colonel Leader gave the
men a talk on discipline, esprit do corps,
morale and other kindred subjects. The
lecture next Monday night will be on pa-
troling, outpost duty and the like.
The next drill will be Thursday nigh.
and will commence at 7:30 o'clock. Drill
will begin with military promptness.
The battalion will make its first ap
pearance Saturday afternoon when it will
take part in the parado which will pro-
cede the liberty loan rally. Men will re
port at 2 o'clock at the armory.

With the American Armies in France,
March 12. American raiders in the sec
tor north of Tout again entered the Ger
man trenches last night at a different
spot than they raided yesterday.
They found the German first lines
evacuated as in the morning attack and
took no prisoners.
The American nrtlllory put down a per
fect barrage simultaneously hammering
the German batteries in the rear. Ma
chine guns whipped the German trenches
whero the wire cntnnglcments had been
cut.
Under cover of the barrage and ma
chine gun fire, the Yankee infantry en
thusiastically went over the top. They
found portions of the German trenches
leveled and dugouts smashed. Some
pieces of bodies, blown to bits by tka
American high explosive shells were dis
covered.
A few shots were exchanged with the
Boches who were lntc in retreating. Tho
raiders returned within 15 minutes after
thcy-hrd left their own trenches.
BRITISH IN RAID
London, March 13. A strong enemy
party raided a British post south of Ar
menticrcs last night, following heavy
bombardment, Field Marshal Haig re
ported today. A few British soldiers are
missing.
In the neighborhood of Lavacquerlc an
approaching party of the enemy was
driven off by the British fire.
A British raid north of Lens was suc
cessful, several prisoners being brought
back.
Southwest of Cambral and opposite
Loos, the enemy's artillery was active
sector nnd at Passchendaele last night
yesterday evening and in the Messines
stctor nnd at Passchendaele last night.

in the Railloan, Angerviller and Lorraine

A German airplane was shot down
north of Soissons. Its three occupants,

ernment. General Cruse says he did

Heath as tho stranger attempted to hold
up a stret car lost night He is believed
to have held up several street cars at
isolated terminals within the past two
weeks.
The Fulton line car, 'on which Heath
was employed wasjust ready to start on
its return trip when the holdup, slipping
from the shadows of the waiting shed
jumped aboard the car. The conductor,
according to pre-arranged plans, backed
into the car, and the motorman, when
cajed to come into tho main part of the
car, fired two shots, one fatally wound
ing the robber.

hunting, Voight using Potruff's rifle to

tition collecting funds so Mrs. Potruff
could hold her homestead. Since he con
fessed the murder of her husband, Voight

Alien Enemy Is Angered by
