Corvallis Farmer Reports Rais
ing Perfect Sweet Cherries
by Feeding Soil,
A preventative and an efficient rem
edy for the control of gummosls in sweet
cherry tree has been discovered and
tested out by W. St.' Faulkner, of Cor
vallis, and this remedy is nothing less
than .lime. An article describing the
process follows:
"Several years ago the writer took up
tho work as representative of the Al
bany Nursery company, jo the Willam
ette valley, who advertised to fill in the
second year all trees that failed to live,
and soon observed that the filling in
process required more sweet cherry
trees than all other trees combined, and
accordingly began a study of the causes
of the loss of the cherry trees. The
writer purchased farm two miles north
of Corvallis and made tests of the soil
and found that the acid soil caused the
gommosls and found that' the me of
slaked or ground lime would counteract
this acidity, and If used in the right
proportion would sweeten the sourest
soil. As a preventative of gummosis
the writer use-i the lime when setting
out his orchard, using aV the rate of
one to three tons of lime to the acre,
accordiug to the nature of the soil, A
hole three feet square was dug for each
tree, and from two to three pounds of
lime mixed with earth. As the trees
grew more lime has been added, being
worked into the soil by cultivation. This
treatment should be continued until the
trees are 6 or 7 years of age. By
this time the roots of tie trees, if they
have bees properly planted aca cared!
for, will hare penetrated to a depth
where they have come in contact with
plenty of lime to counteract the add
at that depth,
"This is why that after the sweet
cherry tree has attained to the age of
7 or 8 years in a healthy condition will
care for Itself, Really, it is too llms
taking cars of the trees, for trees in
fected with gummosis, If they are sot
too far gaae, treatment with lime
worked into the soil will improve them,
and in many cases restore them to a
healthy condition. The lime should be
worked well down to the roots of the
trees. Here is where the lime will
come handy to apply by the ton, one to
three tons to the acre. It may be pos
sible that we will be forced to obtain
this lime by the Sam Moore plan of
production, but judging from the way
that the writer has beard from 2000
to 3000 sen talk ia the last four
months, it can't be very long until we
will be hearing the whistling of the
lime and rock crushers. It will then
be that we can afford to buy lime for
any and all purposes that, we may want
it for.
"The writer has made tests of all the
sweet cherries, including the Royal Ann,
Bing, Lambert, Centennial, May Duke,
Black Tartarian and the Royal Ann
grafted on HasBard seedlings, and never
has sprayed with anything eni has had
three erops of cherries, and has never
been bothered with gummosis except on
trees of same varieties planted near by
without the lime treatment. tPhese were
badly infected with gummosis, most of
them already dead and pulled eat, where
he has young trees now of the same
varieties growing nicely, but filled the
holes with lime nd earth, as he did
with the trees that have never been
bothered with gummosis."
