Sunday evening broke Into the tailor
shop of the Institution and after

son authorities put the penitentiary
blond hounds on his track and traced
him as far south as th Southern
Pacific depot, where 'lie hounds re
fused lonacr to follow the scent.
Inquiries made at the state prison
also developed the fact that another
prisoner, ltobert Owens. escaped
Monday and that he has not yet been
captured. Owens was sent up from
1'iiion county for f;rand larceny and
was a trusty. He was employed In
the brickyard, and some time during
the forenoon of Monday, evidently be
coming tired of his job, deliberately
walked away.

The Creswell public schools opened
Monday with a cood attendance In all
grades. Quite a number of schol
ars were not present on the opening
day,, but will enroll during e next
week or two.
The 0.r starts with bright pros
pects for one of the best terms In
the history of the school. Kvery
thlng possible has been done for the
benefit of the students y the board
of directors. A competent corps of
teachers have charge of the work, the
building which was erected last year
at a cost of $10.0011. has been Im
proved in several ways and every
thing points to a very bene.icial
year.
Some changes were made In (ho
teachers. The fifth and sixth grades
which were taught last year by .Miss
j Kdlth Stacy will be in charge of Aliss
: Sybil Harrington. Aliss Kdith Sucre
will have charge of the seventh nnd
eighth grades in place of Aliss Clare
Stacy, and Professor H. S. Wakefield
wtll act as principal In place of
Professor P. K. linker. Miss F.lva
Klchardson will Instruct the priniir;v
grade and Miss Kdna Weber wul
have the third and fourth grades, the
same as last year, and Uuy E. Kich-
I ards will again assist in the high
i school woik. Kvery teacher is ex

College Student?.
Several students leave here this
week to attend college in different
parts of the state. Frank Harring
ton. Kdward Weber and Tressa Haw
ley go to C'orvallis to attend the ug
rlcultural..,college. Hay cleaver and
Leslie Lacy to attend Albany college;
Floyd Lnwton to Willamette Univer
sity at Sa'.em and Frank Noland goes
to Eugene to outer the University of
Oregon.

Scott returned Saturday from a hunt
ing trip east of the Uohemin coun
try. They killed two deer nnd J. L.
Scott ran a large black bear to death.
He Intends to have the hide tanned
and made Into a rug.
