"The dandruff germ is the grant-1
est ;i6:'i mi i)ost of today," declares!
one of the world's greates' r,!oi,u'1's
and students of diseases of the hair.
In a fcn. Interview ho said: "If
the germs of dandruff are not soon
uua.ailiued, the United States will
some day be known as the hairless
nation. The Americans must wage
a relentless war of extermination at
once, and I am going to help them."
"My receipt for killing dandruff
germs, well known as Parisian Sage,
is now being manufactured In the
United States.'
There Is only one way to cure
dandruff, and that Is to kill the dan
druff germs.
There is only one preparation that
will kill the germs, and that Is Par

Parisian Sage Is now manufactur

New York. Jan. -I. New York
has recently been the scene of sever
al spirited meetings having for their
purpose the adoption of a national
flower. Ureal rivalry has developed
among the various factious favoring
the different posies, but it now seems
evident that the lines of battle will
be drawn between the advocates of
the mountain laurel and the friends
of the columbine. Petitions to con
gress are now being prepared by the
leaders ou both sides, and the Sol
ons at Washington will be asked to
arbitrate the matter.
Prof. Frederick l.eltoy Sargent,
formerly of Harvard, but now In
structor of botany at the University
of Wisconsin, heads the columbine
forces, and has Just delivered a tell
ing blow upon the laurel adherents,
lie asserts that laurel contains a
deadly poison, andromedotxiu, wiiictt.
If It Is as bad as it sounds, should be
sufficient to forever blast the hopes
of the laurel lovers. This poison,
says Prof. Sargent, is more powerful
than strychnine.
On the subject of his favorite flow
er, the columbine, Mr. Sargent has
waxed enthusiastic. Blooming red, !
whilo and blue In various parts of!
the country, all columbine, says Mr. J
Sargent, is certainly a patriotic flow
er. Hut that Isn't all. It's namo Is
derived from the saino Latin word as
Columbia and Columbus. That ought
to be more than sufficient, but lis
ten: Botanlcally, the columbine be
longs to the genus nquilegia, which,
as you must know, is derived from
the Latin aquiln, meaning the e.igie. ,
A bird of a flower, what? lint I'rof.
Sargent doesn't stop there. The ter
minal sepnient of the columbine, he
asserts, contains thirteen parts, sym
bolic or the thirteen original states.
Meanwhile the members of the
Kansas Club of New York, In the in
terests of peace, are planning to run
the sunflower on a dark horse.
Speaking of centennials you were,
weren't you tomorrow will be the
centenary of the birth of Dr. Kdwlu
11. Davis, famed throughout the
world as a physician, medical In
structor, author and archaeologist,
and the anniversary will be Inform
ally observed by the scientists of this
city.
Dr. Davis was born In Ohio, Janu
ary 22, 1811, and died In this city
May 15, 18S8. Ho gained Immortal
ity through his work, "The Ancient
Monuments of the Mississippi Val
ley," which the distinguished Swiss
scientist, Morlot, declared was "as
glorious a monument of American
science ns Bunker Hill Is of Ameri
can bravery." This great book, tho

ters", coitttlitutct) the first volume of
the collection of the Smithsonian Institution.
Another centenary soon to be ob
served Is that of William Page, the
artist and portrait painter, which
falls ou Monday next. Albany was
the birthplace of Page, but most of
his hie was spent in this city, and lie
died at his home In Statou Island In
ISS'i. For many years he was the
president of the National Academy.
He was also an enthusiastic sports
man ami Invented many improve
ments in boats and guns.
The tendency of young ladies to
alter the spelling of their names t
by no means confined to shop girls.
"The Colonel's lady, and Judy the
Ogrudcigh are sisters under the
skin." Just now tliero Is an epi
demic of this sort of phonetic spell
ing, and, although it had its begin
ning in Washington, the craze has
spread to New York society circles
and will doubtless soon make itself
felt all over the country. The eld
est daughter of the secretary of the
navy commenced it. Originally Mlsaj
Alice Meyer, she Intely announced
that she Is hereafter to bo referred i
to by press nnd public as Miss Alyai
Meyer. All tho Alices In the BOclety
of New York and Washington are
now practicing the writing of "Alys."
and tho old-fashioned Alice will
doubtless soon become extinct in our
best social circles.
Bluntly Increasing, and a consider
able addition to the popular knowl
edge or the southern continent will
be mnilo by the excursion of the
stcnnishlpllliiecher, which sails from
New York today on a seventy-four
day cruise to South American and
West Indian ports. The tourists will
visit the principal cities and places
of Interest In Brazil. Uruguay, Chile,
and Argentina, passing through the
atrults o f Magellan. A few years ago,
such a tour would have attracted
lit lie patronage, but New Yorkers
and tho people of the country at
large are now awaking to the fact
that there Is much of interest to be
seen in South America, as well as
great possibilities In the way of
trade and commercial development.
