COMPLAINT ABOUT
TELEPHONE SERVICE
8prlnfleld Jan. 13. There Is lit
tle complaint In this city concerning
tho telephone service. In spit of the
fact that the Commercial club has a
coinmlttco working on the possibili
ties of a new company. It Is gener
ally tidmitted that the actual Spring
field service la almost above Im
provement. With the new switch
board and the operation of an unus
unlly efficient central force, all the
complaint against the city telephone
service has been eliminated. In com
pany with Manager ileaton, of the tel
ephone company, a Guard reporter
Interviewed a number of leudlug cit
izens of Bprlngfleld yesterday in an
effort to learn the nature of the Com
mercial club's complaint. It seems
thut what IS objected to Is the prac
tice of running tho farmers' lines In
to Kiigcne when they are In reullty In
Springfield's territory. It was
claimed that tho telcphono company
had refused the farmers' request to
ho allowed to connect with the
Springfield exchange. It was also
thought that the lines running up the
McKiiuzlo river, as well as to Wend
llng and Natron, should be centred In
Springfield office. Mr. Ileaton ex
plained thut where tho farmers had
requested to bo connected with the
Springfield exi'hange ho hnd never
eucournged them to come to Kugcno,
and that ho would ho perfectly will
ing to put any lino on the Springfield
exchange where the majority of the
parties desired. In regard to the
McKonzle and Wendlltig lines he stat
ed that tho actual business done on
these Hues from Springfield was in
significant In cnmpurlson with that
done from Wugene, nnd that It would
not bo wise in any way to put these
on tho Springfield exchange ut pres
ent. There was also an objection In re
gard to the rates. It was claimed
that some of the farmers are paying
as high as $7. fill a year, while others
only pay a dollar. Mr. Ileaton ex
plained that there was no party on n
Springfield farmers' line paying 7.ii0
and that there had been no Increase
In the rates for 'phono service In
Springfield. It there hnd been he
said that such parlies would ho enti
tled to a rebate, lie suited that he
would be plensed to consider nny com
plaint from the Conimorclul club, and
thought Unit matters could be nrrnng
ed by a definite and friendly under
standing as easily as from a hostile
vantage point.
