Washington. In the Palouse and Big
Bend districts, the cold winter in
flicted serious damage to fall wheat
and greatly cut down the yield.
Washington growers are harvesting a
crop calculated at 18,000,Q00 bush
els, compared with 30,000,000 a year

Suburban acreage about Eugene Is
growing in value very fast. 1 wo
years ago I offered hill lands In City
View Park at $40 per acre, and very
few perrons could be induced to buy.
Last month I sold this same land at
auction, without Improvements, for
$105 per acre, and at private sale on
long time for $200 per acre. The
future growth of Eugene will soon
make it worth $1000 to $2000 per
acre. Last month I sold Florence
acreage by auction for 46 times what
it sold for six years previously, and
the joke of It Is that the buyer re
sold It within thirty days for eight
times what ho paid for It, or 308
times what it sold for a little more
than six years ago. This experience
will be repeated many times In the
next few years. Deepening tne bius
law bar to eighteen feet will Increase
its shipping capacity over 400 per
cent. If Lane county people, instead
of sending their money to Canada
and elsewhere for investment would
invest it In Eugene and Florence real
estate they would make more money
and at the same time help develop

Cottage Grove in the presence of
many people. A company ot young
men were assembled In front of the
Leader office, when someone offered
to wager $2.50 that no one In the
crowd could pass from one telephone
pole to another, hand-over-hand, on
the one-Inch cable which Is stretched
from pole to pole, about 2a feet,
above the street. Young Dyer de-i
clared he could accomplish the feat
and win the wager, whereupon he
climbed up the ladder pegs on a pole,
seized the cable and started upon his
perilous undertaking. When little
more than half way across he became
exhausted and lost his grip in one
