July 21. Unofficial reports received at the
fctate that Sergeant Hess and ten men were kill
la in one of the batteries at Fortress Monroe at
today. The accident took place in the DsEus-
kas caused by the blowing out of a breech block
guns.

are forcing hundreds of men into action to prevent their spread.
A number of towns are in danger already, it is reported, and
