AT SUNDOWN
When Ihi' Kim of your life's going down In the West, you'll
try to recall all your deeds that were beat, for soon at the seat of
the Judge you'll appear, to give an account of your stewardship
he re. Each day you are doing something that may seem as smart
and brilliant as any man's scheme; perhaps it will gain the ap
plause of the town, hut h'jw will It look when the sun's going
down? Bach day you are striving to build up your pile, and maybe
resorting In systems of guile, and when you are asked If you think It
Is straight, you have your defense and" begin to orate: "There's
fierce competition and men who would win mustn't be too afraid
of the shadow of sin." That logic may do In the loud, bustling
town, but how will It look when the sun's going down? You'd
like to be good If you only had time, but you are so busy pursu
ing the dime that helping your brother or trying to cheer the grief
stricken pilgrims now Journeying here is merely an impulse that
comes but to fade; there's only one temple, whose idol is trade;
and there you may grovel for wealth and renown but how will It
Becm when the sun's going down?

the place all day long. Everybody was

It is reported now, an apparently good authority, that Hill
Will take over the Oregon Electric, now operating between
Portland and Salem, on April 1 5th. If this proves true, it is
also understood that the Portland, Eugene & Eastern will be-
Ity of goods carried. The interior
:of the big room has been entirely
remodeled, since vacated by the Cres
cent store several months ago, and
a large addition has been built to the
re;ir. giving a great deal more floor
space and more light than the other
j store had.
The ladles' department occupies
the entire northern half of the build
ing and extends back into the add I-

doubt explan3 why the extension of both these lines has been
held up, and we may expect renewed activity immediately after
the change in ownership takes place. Hill will no doubt push the
main line of the Oregon Electric up the valley as soon as possi
ble, in order to invade the Harriman territory, as well as to se
cure a base for his operations eastward through the McKenzie
pass to connect with his Deschutes road and westward from
this city to Coos Bay. To offset this rapid advance of Hill the
Southern Pacific is rushing work on the Oregon Eastern, east!1'1 eacn aro emioyed in the
irom tms city to Klamath i'alls, and have let the contract tor, so
it is reported, the lino from Ontario, Oregon, westward to con
nection with the Oregon Eastern. It is also rumored that the
completion of the Drain branch to Coos Bay has again been in
definitely held up, and that the Southern Pacific is seriously con
sidering a line from Eugene to Coos Bay, which will interfere
with, if it does not block the rapidly maturing plans of the Hill
interests.
Joseph Cannon, like his predecessors, Thomas Reed and Da
vid Henderson, has finaly been dethroned by a revolution. All
became drunk with unlimited power, and the history of the lower
house of congress for many years past may be likened to that
of the Central American republics, when one dictator holds sway
until another dethrones him, and is in due course of time driven
from power by a revolution. The lesson that is taught is that
the rules should bo so amended that every congressman sent to
Washington to represent a constituency should be given an op
portunity to take part in the deliberations of the house. Under
the Reed-He"ierson-Cannon system the speaker has absolutely
dictated le islation, and the aleged representatives of the peo
plo have been mere puppets in his hands.
The Nesmith county boomers must anyway be given credit
for their push and hustle. They have already secured space
in fully half the newspapers of the state for arguments advanced
in support of their cause.
