THEATHE BLOCK
Graduate From 0. A. C. Will
Probably Be Accepted to
Direct the Course
After establishing a complete com
Iraerclal course and beginning a ped
agogj class that will shortly lead to
a two vears' normal course. Princi
pal Hug Is planning a course in agri
culture for the Eugene High school
that will bring many of the Lane
county students home from the O. A.
C. and serve the many farmers' boys
and girls that are attending In Eu
gene. Mr, Hug has worked on the plan
tor some time, and when in Corval
lis a short time age talked the mat
ter over with President Kerr, who ap
proved of and seemed pleased W1M
the plan.
The course will be similar to that
given at O. A. C. and also in many of
the High schools of the Hast and
Middle West, notably Kansas. The
first semester's work deals with three
topics, farm animals, which studies
the nature and care of every animal,
from the horse to the pig; milk and
its products, and soils. The second
semester continues with soils, then
takes up the subject of field crops,
and lastly orchard and garden crops.
The subject will require little
equipment and will be carried on in
connection with the science courses.
A graduate from O. A. 0. will possi
bly be secured as instructor.
Student Body Meeting
At a student body meeting at the
High school yesterday afternoon the
1909 football men were presented
with their "E"s, a football manager
for 1910 was chosen and a resolution
brought up to limit only those who
have earned their "E"s and sweaters
to wear the emblems. Clay Watson
was the choice for football manager.
The students who received "B"s
for the first time were: Bradshaw,
Noland, Porter, Sims, Morrison.Grlf
f in and Deliar: others who already
have earned the emblem: Koch.
Ditstin. Pengra, Rao, Jenkins and
Preston.
The resolution in regard to wear
ing the emblems was the result of
the growing custom of the men al
lowing them to be worn by their girl
friends.
Enquiries from Salem
Professor George Hug, principal of
the High school, has received an in
quiry from Salem High school as to
what was done in Eugene with the
students who (ailed in the six weeks'
report in two or more subjects. The
Salem authorities are considering the
plaa of dropping till these students.as
is done at the University of Oregon
at the end of each semester who have
failed to pass in nine hours.
This problem has been solved In
the High school here by the system
recently introduced, having personal
attention from the teachers to their
assigned number of students. When
a pupil falls below in any subject i;
is reported each week to his or her
instructor, and this teacher investi
gates the reason, if necessary visit
ing the parents, and giving personal
! help where needed. Per the short
I time tills has been worked the nuni
. her of Hunkers has been greatly re
duced, and at the last six weeks' re
port there were not a few who bad
"E"s in two or more subjects.
Girls' Gymnasium
The attic of the High school is be
ing fitted up for a girls' gymnasium,
which will be open at the first of the
next semester. Or. Stewart, dean of
women tit the University, lor a cou
ple ef months will devote a couple ot
, hours each day as an Instructor until
the High school teachers, probably
BMIly Mu.Jir, can carry on the work.
The girls' gym Is needed in the
j High school more 'ban anywhere else,
as the High school period is generally
the critical point in the girls' lit',..
:lt Is not infrequent that a girl breaks
'down before she finishes her course.
and stoopc.1 shoulders about the
, school evidence the need of such a
I course.
The plan is for the first semester
I to have the gym work optional, but
next year It will probably be made rc
, quired.
Miss Mubr is now visiting the
schools of Portland and intermediate
points to get new ideas and pointers,
especially on the parents' ro-npera-tlve
system now being advocated
; here.
