Rainier, Or., Dec. 12. Four young
people, residents of Maygera, Or., met
terrible deaths by drowning in the
Columbia river early Sunday morn
ing when a launch in which tbey were
riding turned turtle at Burton's land,
ing, spilling the party ot seven Into
the Icy cold water. Three of the par
ty were rescued after hanging to
grim death for seven hours, which to
them seemed like centuries.
The dead are:
Miss Selma Hendrlckson, aged 17;
Anna Hendrlckson, aged 19; Grace
Waud, nged 16, and Lee Barber, aged
20.
The rescued are:
Pearl Proctor, aged 20; Frank
Kasper. aged 20, and Amos Card,
aged 19. '

Lee Barber, who hung on for near
ly an hour and a half, was first to let
go. "I'm getting sleepy," he said.
"I'm going to sleep," and he slipped
back Into the water and did not rise.
The next to drop off was Miss Selma
Hendrlckson, who held on perhaps
half an hour longer. Soon afterward
Anna Hendrlckson, her sister,, went
to a watery grave.
The survivors clung to the boat un
til 6 a. m., making just seven hours
in all, when the tugboat Burton came
along and answering their cries, res
cued them. They were brought to
Pnlnler and loft for their home In
Maygers Sunday morning. The trio
were all In good health and not much
the worse for their experience.

traffic department of the Harriman
lines In the Northwest, which have
been under consideration ever since
Mr. Harriman's last sickness took a
turn that he knew ended his active
mtuiiigement of his linos, were an
nounced officially this morning. They
are:
R. B. Miller, general freight agent
of the O. R. & N. and the Hnrrlman
lines in Oregon, becomes traffic man
ager of the O. R. & N. and the South
ern Pacific lines In Oregon and the
Oregon & Washington, effective Jan
uary 1, 1910.

Wilbur K. Coman, first assistant
general freight agent of the O. II. &
N. and the Southern Pacific lines in
Oregon, becomes general freight

PORTLAND PROPERTY
Dr. H. F. Ong closed a deal yester
day for the purchase of the Holman
homestead, located at the southeast
corner of Thirteenth and Salmon
streets. The property comprises a
quarter block and is improved with
an old-style frame dwelling. Dr.
Ong paid $41,000 for the holding. It
was purchased as an investment, the
buyer contemplating the erection of a
modern family hotel or apartment
house on the site within the next
