Xo Change of Policy
Judge Thompson, when seen by a
Guard reporter soon after he was
sworn In, stated that there would be
no change of policy in the judge's of
fice as far as he knew, and said:
"If I make as good a Judge us my

beautiful weather of today brought
out Immense crowds to witness the
great parade ot the Portola festival..
It was a parade headed by Don Gas-'
par de Pcrtola and Queen .Yerilia,
and was the greatest affair ot the
kind ever witnessed in the olty. All
California was represented by per
sona) delegations from the various
towns or by official flouts and twen
ty thousand people In line.
The most sivectacular feature was
two thousand Chinese carrying the'
largest fire breathing dragon ever
imported, while the whole Oriental
section was a gorgeous riot of color.
The Sanish war veterans, headed by
General James V. Smith, formor
governor general of the Phllllpplues,
and commander of the first Califor
nia volunteers in the Spanish-American
war, carried the huge American
flag made for the Hudson-Fulton
celebrations. -

have displaced carriages to such an
extent that Che carriage-builders are
obliged; to retire from business or
devote their attention to the con
struction ot automobile bodies.
In effect this was the statement
made today by Maurice Connolly of
Dubuque, la., president of the Car
riage Builders' National Association
of the United States, which convened
here In. its 35th annual meeting.

of the Agricultural Department, said
the supply of hardwood rroni which
the bodies of both carriages and au
tomobiles are constructed' Is dimin
ishing rapidly.
