( A MONEY AFRAID OF STOCKS
Wlieu Interstate Commerce Commissioner Lane informs us
that foreign money would gladly seek investment in American
railroad stocks if government supervision gave assurance that
money so invested would really have behind it the railroad prop
crty, he tells nothing surprising, says the Detroit News. Could
money be invested in railroad stocks in this country with the cer
tainty thai it was buying an interest in the railroad, and not just
simply water, there would be plenty of money from nearer by
than Europe to go into just such stocks.
As a matter of fact, railroad securities ought to be the finest
and safest investments in the United States. Under the fran
chise rights granted railroads in this country, and under the am
ple protection given railroads, their securities should form the
ideal refuge for trust funds held for the protection and benefit of
minors and other helpless people. But it is known to all that ,
i the present circumstances any person responsible for the j
safety of trust funds who would invest such funds in American
railroad stocks would be Wgarded as little if anything short oi
criminal in his action.
Some railroad bonds are very fair seou'rity, , Others are not.
And as for the stocks, they often mean too little in real value.
It is an absurd situation, and one that ned. n6t existj ' The gov
ernment ought to supervise the issue pf ;afcfj4$rpaq fcecuriti,
which should be based on the property at its actual worth. With
this done it would not be necessary for railroad officials to
hawk their stocks in Europe. . There is plenty of money in' the
United States seeking safe investment and it, would go into the
railroads in almost unlimited sums if that could be brought
about which Mr. Lane says would bring foreign money to this
country. ...
Medical
., i -The Medford Tribune quotes Congressman Hawley as saying
thai Medford is the best known town in Oregon, outside of Fort
land. Brother Hawley should be more circumspect in his utter
ances we poll over 2000 votes here in Eugene, and publicity is
whee we shine.
After a couple of rainy days, work on Eugene's numerous
buildings under construction has been resumed. There will be
plenty of. work for a large force of carpenters all winter.
It really makes little difference whether Dr. Cook discovered
the North Pole. His lecture tour receipts and book sales are
quite satisfactory.
If Jim Hill is behind half the railroad projects credited to
him here in Oregon railroad development will be fast and furious.
Now we ought to have a busy and pleasant fall season in
Oregon.

annual convention of Oregon Baptists
opened laxt evening In the Baptist
churohi of Hoseburg. The convention
suasion wsb preceded by a meeting of
the general board of directors, which
prepared report of the closing year's
business and church growth. The
sessions will close FVIday evening.
There will be a banquet Thursday
night, served at the Christian church
by the ladles of that church.
Services last evening were led by
Rev. A. B. Waltz of Portlands Rev. I.
N. Munroe of Portland and Rev. S.
A. Haywood of Oregon City, deliver
ed addresses. This morning twelve
addresses were made on the theme,
"The Christian Minister," and a gen
eral discussion followed.

Owing to the fact that the Bunga

very uncertain. Manager Geary has
been In Portland the past few days
negotiating for a house. He lias a
date on the 12th of February partly
promised by the Bungalow, but if
this fnlls through he has an option
on Mr. Shubert's building (the old
Heiligl. A house has been arranged
for in Salem on .February 11.
The club will leave for the south
on December 20, and will disband In
Ashland on September 23. Manager
Geary said this morning: "I wish to
make the trip south as short as possi
ble, in order that the boys who de
sire may got home for Christmas."
