Will R. King, the Biipreme court to
day announced an opinion In which it
Is held- that the charter of the city of
St. Johns ts very similar to that of
Medford in that It Is superior to the
local option law. The St. Johns
charter is. held to be a special act au
thorized by an amendment adopted
by the lnltatlve in 1906 by which the
power is conferred upon the city
council of St. Johns to regulate the
sale of liquor.

being the fourtlh child.
With his parenls he moved to their
home on the Mohawk about twelve
miles from Eugene. Early in life
he went O the Couer d'Alene mines
wheie he spent several years. He
also spent several years in other
minus In the Western states. In
1892 'he came for a visit with his
parents after whioh he returned to
the mlnQ in British Columbia, and
Montana. In 1901 he was called
home by the deHth of his ither and
the serious Illness of his. brother
Paul, who dleJ'a month later. Short
ly after this he '4lted Alaska, from
there he went to the Panama Zone.
Of hi' years he has lived in dif
ferent parts 'of California, mostly in
San K'raiK'isro and Downlsville, near
where ho died.
He was kind hearted, Jovial dis
position and a seneral favorite of all
friends and relatives. He leaves a
kind, loving mother, who will great
ly, miss his frequent letters 'home.
Also several brothers aOl sisters, all
of whom were present nt the funerul.
