DEATH OF GOVERNOR JOHNSON
The death of Governor Johnson will cause a pang of regret
throughout the nation. He was still a young man who gave
promise of great usefulness to tho plain people, one of whom
ho still remained, although by force of ability and integrity he
had thrice boon oloctcd to the governorship of a great stato.
Governor Johnson's life story would read like a romance in
any country except America, still tho land of equal opportunity,
where industry may overcome poverty and natural ability
wolghs far more than social position or advantages of birth.
Johnson's youth was surrounded by tho direst poverty, his father
a worthless drunkard, compelling tho boy's mother to work over
the washtub in order to support her children, until the future
governor was old enough to take up tho burden of labor himself.
And yet this man, of foreign parentage, becamo governor of his
Btate in tho early thirties, won distinction and power, and
gained tho respect of tho entire nation, without tho assistance
of wealthy or influontiul frionds, and without resorting to the
methods of tho domagogue. His was a typical American ca
reer, ending all too soon, and bringing a touch of sorrow to po
litical friend and foe aliko, who feel that his doath is a national
boreavemont.
Tho closing scono in tho doath chamber this morning was
typical of tbe fortitude and tondorncss which are tho attributes
of real manhood. Pressing, with faint and waning strength, his
wife's hand against his cheek, ho whispered;
"Well, Nora, I made a good fight, but I guoss I've got to go."
As a man llveth, so shall ho dlo,
Tho address of President Taft at Omaha yesterday rang
true. It was his best and cloarcBt utterance of the present tour.
He says that he purposes to control the trusts and corporations
in tho interest of good govornmont, and there is a ring of sincer
ity In his words. Tho plan of legislation tho president suggests
sooms reasonable and gives ovidonco of having boon carefully
eonsidored.
How'd you like to finance the city of New York? It's only
going to cost tho measly little sum of $184,000,000 for the
next flsoal year, which is only $28,000,000 more than the cost
for this year, $17,000,000 of which is for salary increases. No
wonder Tammany is a powerful organisation.
Dan Murchlnion, a Minnesota fisherman, is either a vaude
ville hero or a nature-faker. He says a bull moose attacked
hlra, upsot his boat and broke ono of his arms, which mado him
s mad that he drew his sheath knife and cut the animal's
throat, and be hat the knife to proove it.
If he wasn't our best paid lecturer Bryan's talk about Demo
cratlo long experience out in the cold specially fitting them for
Arctio work might cause it to be thought that ho was content
plating something in that lino,
JL
Has Hearst turned tightwad? Tho query is prompted by his
declaration that ho would not arcept the nomination for mayor of
New York, or any other old office. He's young to have tired of
the gumo of running for office.
London must be "easy" to "good frontcrs." An American
actress has filed a petition in bankruptcy over there, with lis
bllitics exceeding $2B,000 and no assets. That's going some,
even for a stage star.
Tho Portland Telegram of Inst evening has good pictures of
a few of Eugene's many new buildings, Including the new Osburn
hotel, the government building and tho new Catholic school.
