News Happenings and Gossip of
the Past Week in the
Metropolis
(liy Glenn Guernsey.)
New York. Auk. 21. it has often
been pointed out that very few of
the men who have made New York
famous are home -irrown iirnilncra
This is not the fault of the stork.who
wonts overtime m the metropolis, yet
most of these babies seem destined,
when of full stature, to become the
slaves and servitors of some alert
"rube" from the wild and wooly, or
up-state, or .New England. "Who's
Who" is remarkably barren of those
born in New York City.
Frank A. Munsev. middle name
Andrew, is one of those rural ones
who came to New York eager for
conquest, and who now employs hun
dreds of New Yorkers In his great
puuiisning plant. Mr. Munsey, by
the way, is today receiving con
gratulations of friends upon having
attained his 55th birthday. The fa
mous publisher, whose income from
dozen or so magazines and newspa
pers is in the neighborhood of a mil
lion dollars a year, was born in Mer
cer, Maine, on August 21, 1S54. The
glory of his career reads like a ro
mance. U is romance, however, with
the feminine elements left out.
Mr. Munsey arnulred his education
in the country schools of his native
state, and at a tender age began his
business career as general factotum
in a country store. Later he took a
post-graduate course in a telegraph
office and in a short time became a
full-fledged lightning juggler. His
ability to do things with the Morse
code landed him at Augusta, where
he was manager of the local Western
Union office.
As one born under a lucky star
and destined from the beginning of
things to succeed, it was inevitable
that young Munsey should have de
cided upon one of two careers. As the
state capital offered to the observant
youth many lessons in politics, and
the little city was also a publishing
centre for that class of monthly peri
odicals which offered literature suit
ed to the Intelligence of the rural
population, sandwiched in between

Recently the Commercial
Club asked the S . Co. for
several improvements in its
passenger service, and the
company promptly did as re-
quested. Among these im-
provements is the observa-
tlon car (In the rear half of
which smoking Is allowed).
This car is attached to the
5:35 evening local going to
I'ortlnnd, and returns from
Portland on the S:15 a 111.
Many people do not seem to
know about this car being on,
and unless it is better patron-
Ized the company cannot af-
ford to keep It on. The extra
cost for riding in this car is
only 50 cents between Eugene
nnd Portland: 25 cents be-
tween Eugene a.id Albany.
It lies with the public
whether this added comfort
nnd luxury In travelling be-
tween here nnd Portland will
he maintained for them or
not.
