ROOSEVELT '(S
D;0E AT MOMBASSA
Expedition Will Embark for the
Trip Into the Jungles
of Africa
Washington. April 41. Within
the next twenty-four hours, barring
unforseen delays, the steamship Ad
miral will reach Mombassa, where
the Roosevelt expedition will disem
bark to begin the Journey Into the
African jungle. The first leg of the
trip Into tie wilderness will be made
by the hunters over the Uganda rail
road, which connects the island of
Mombassa with tie mainland and
then extends on to Machakas, a to
tal distance of some two hundred
miles. At Machakas Mr. Roosevelt
and his party will visit for several
weeks with Sir Alfred Pease, a fa
mous hunter with whom Mr. Roose
velt Is already acquainted.
The journey from Mombassa to
Machakas is an extremely pictur
esque one. Leaving the British East
Africa seaport, the railway runs past
killndlni, and dips down to Salis
bury bridge, a magnificent viaduct
1700 feet Ions, connecting the island
of .Mombassa with the mainland, and
then begins the steep climb to the
small station of Changawa. At the
latter point is obtained a fine view
of the arms of the sea that enfold
Mombassa. The ascent to Changam
wo is sharp, and though the distance
is still short from the coast, the trav
eler can observe game from the car
windows. At Vei. which is 1000 feet
above sea level, the Roosevelt party
will have an opportunity to see, Mt.
Kilimanjaro, one of the highest of
the mountain peaks in Africa, rear
ing its-crest 19,000 feet into the
clouds.
The jungle railway then passes
through undulating and fairly open
country until the train reaches Tsa
vo station, on the banks of the lit
tle river of the same name. An Idea
of the abundance of big game in this
vicinity may be had from the state
ment that during the construction of
the Ugunda railway no less than 600
of the workmen were killed near the
Tsavo station by man-eating Hons.
A run of some fifty miles farther
will bring the hunting party to Ma
kindu, a little over two hundred
miles from Mombassa, and over 3000
feet above the level of the sea. The
middle of May will probably find the
party at Nairobi, the capital of the
Hrltish East Africa protectorate. At
Nairobi the expedition's headquar
ters will be established for the great
er portion of the hunt.
i Recent advices from Mombassa tell
of elaborate preparations being
made there for the reception of Mr.
RooRevelt. An official welcome will
l)e extended by Frederick John Jack
son, lieutenant governor of the pro
tectorate. Mr. Roosevelt will find
a genial companion In Mr. Jackson,
for the latter Is a famous sportsman
and the author of a book upon big
game.

MEET TO SELECT
UNIVERSITY RECTOR
Washington, April 21. In Cath
olic circles much interest is manlfest-
d in the annual meeting today ol
the archbishops of the United States
and the board of directors of the
Catholic University of this city. The
interest is due largely to the fact
that the meeting is called upon to
select a permanent rector of the uni
versity to succeed msnop u. J.
O'Connell, who was recently placed
in charge of the San Francisco dio-.
cese. While it is generally believed
that the present Incumbent, Dr. Thos.
J. Shahan, who was appointed by the
pope as provisional rector, will be
continued -in office, his selection Is
not altogether a certainty, as it Is
necessary for the board to select
three names to send to Rome. Dr.
Edmund T. Shahan and Dr. Charles
P. Grannan, both of whom are members-
of the ulnversity faculty, are
regarded as the most likely candi
dates In addition to Dr. Shahan.
FINCH'S PECULIAR
PLEA FOR LIFE
Salem, April 0. The State of Ore
gon today filed Its brief in the case
igalnst James A. Finch, convicted
of the murder of Ralph Fisher. In
reply to the contention of the Appel
late Court the verdict and judgment
of the lower court are contrary to
the constitution of the state, in that
it sought to take appellant's lite and
therefore reader reformation im
possible. The state's attorney says:
"No authorities are cited by the
appellant in favor of this contention,
and we doubt that any court ever
he,d such a doctrine. It has always
been conceded that some persons,
and especially assassins, are beyond
reformation In this life, and it seems
rather strange that it has taken 50
years to maKe the discovery that the
punishment prescribed by the laws
of the -Scate of Oregon for murder
In the first degree is unconstitutional."

the wrestling bouts at Portland, ex
pects to take his match with LaSalle
Friday night. If reiterated state
ments are true, both men want to
win badly. Considerable expression
of opinion has passed between the
men over a mutch In Portland, and
the battle ought certainly to be for
blood.
O'Connell Is the lighter man,' but
he has established a remarkable rep
utation for cleverness, speed and
headwork. His build Is unusual for
a wrestler. Instead of short and
heavy, he is rather tall and slim, but
with unusual strength and endur
ance for a man of his weight.
LaSalle belongs to the class nbove
O'Connell, the welterweight. In. the
Berg-LaSalle go here, he showed that
he was fast and clever. Against
O'Connell, however, he will have the
advantage in weight by anywhere
from ten to fifteen pounds.
Hanilin Match Postponed
The wrestling bout between Joe
LaSalle and Ed Hamlin has been
postponed from next Monday night
to some date yet to bo decided upon.
.Mr. Hamlin's wife had to undergo a
surgical operation last Monday, and
until she is out of danger Mr. Ham
