I'OIITLAM) MAKKKT KEPORT
Portland, Jan. 28. Bercral local
creameriea cut their price on butter
thin morning 2c a pound, to 35c, and
others are anklnu 7c. The market
la showing an eaaler tone all the way
through, although aa far as local
business Is concerned, the laeal trade
has thus far experienced ne difficulty
In maintaining values. A small sur
plus Is beginning to make its appear
ance and it la on this account that
some of the makers decided to cut
their values this morning and which
may In turn bring about a lower
rungo on nil makes tomorrow morn
lug. The fact that the market here
is still qulto well supplied with East
ron butter la the one depressing fea
ture of the present situation. Bo fur
as the smull surplus now being shown
in tho market of city creamery, the
same Is not at all bearish, but the
Russian sold at 94 cents. Club wheat
was quoted at 96 ''i 9, cents.
The buying price of oats was raised

Chickens Slightly Su-udier
There Is a slight 'increase in stead
iness of the local chicken market and
while demand is not healthy enough
to make any change In quotations, the
accumulations along the street are
decreasing and all through the mar
ket the demand is better.

Way up In the air the egg nuirket
sailed during the past 21 hours. With
arrlvii.-i tho-smal lest e.ver seen In this
market not even excepting tho pe
riod of the eold snap the demnnd is
quite fair, and one or two sales have
been made along (he street as high as
50c, although the general market
ranges about 35c. IOven this figure
would be hard to maintain wore there
any material Increase In the supplies,
of home eggs. The fact that Eastern
fresh eggs nro being brought to this
markot by express has not altered the
situation In the least 'because
supplies are so small that without
the Eastern stock eggs would rapidly
advanco to, the highest price ever
seen in this market.
Several Hop Sales
Two large lots of hops wore sold
In the local market yesterday at 7
1-2 cents. They were the Twin Wo
and Goon Dip lot of 274 bales, bought
by Julius Plncus, of Salem, and the
Clackamas Hop Farm Company's lot
of 257 bales, bought by Klabor, Wolf
& Netter. Doth were of good quali
ty, especially the latter lot.
Isaac Plncus & Sons, of Tacoma.
hnvo beon operating heavily In Ore
gon hops of late, their purchases In
(ho past week aggregating 750 bales
of prime and choice quality at 7 to
1(1-2 cents. Most of these wero se
cured from dealers. According to
Harry Plncus. the firm ran buy to
bolter advantage from dealers ihan
from growers.
i In reporting a number of sales of
common to medium New York hops.
I at 10 cents, the Wntervllle Times
says:
I "These slocks four weeks ago re
ceived no nttcMtlou from dealers, but
now nil this grade of hops nre I -lag
bought up. There were also reported
the purchase of two amnll lots of
choice hops grown In Augusta for
which tho buyer paid t2 cents. The
general feeling reflected on this mar
ket, therefore, is that or a firm, ac
tive trading, with a growing demand
for all grades of hops."

was the figure obtainable. Some very
"rood stuff which would ordinarily be
called top was sold from" 15c to 20c
under that, amount as will be noted
by the Itemized sales in this report
There are hopeful signs in the mar
ket even at this period. Iteceipts show
signs of letting up for awhile and if
(his Is continued for a Short time it
will enable killers to get rid of some
of their accumulating surplus and al
low them to again send their buyers
Into the open market.
The extent of the overload which
packers and killers are carrying is
shown by the fact that six loads of
cattle were carried over from yes
terday because of the lack of demand
even at the lower rnnge of quotations.
The following is the general range
of values on stock ruling In the yards
