tured this morning at the University
assembly on "Arts and Crafts, and
the Spirit of Socialism."
This Is the third trip of the dis
tinguished lecturer to America. He
says that the view point of America,
particularly Industrial America, is
changing from the egotistic certainty
that it Is right, to one of doubt.
"Americans are beginning to feel" he
said, "that something may be wrong
with their system, as the gulf be
tween labor and the class of finan
ciers is widening and is harder to
cms?."
The purpose of the Arts and Crafts
movement, according to this leader,
Is to abolish the evils in Industry, do
ing away with the inutilities of our
lives, such things as nickel plated
bathtubs or the absurd l.nlek-knneks
of the ordinary parlor. The lecturer
advocated to put ' individuality into
products of Industry. He wants more
than mere machine mndo things. Ev
ery manufacture, he believes, should
bo a moral purpose of a life.
Mr. Ashby will speak this evening
at the Fortnightly Club rooms. His
subject will be "William Morris."

prohibition was defeated. Both slues

Medford, by its remarkable char
ter giving it the right to govern Its
municipal affairs which charter was
sustained by the supreme'uourt of the
state, had remained the only. oasis in
the south' part ot the state. The
prohibitionists firmly believed that
a vote of the people would decide the
matter for some time, and fully con
fident of the outcome in their favor
they entered the campaign.
The vote was the largest in the his
tory of the city on a city question,
926 votes being cast.
W. H. Cannon was elected mayor,
John Demer, V. J. Kmerick and E. A.
Welch were elected councllmen. Pro
hibition was defeated by 127 major
ity and the attempt to amend the
charter to make It conform with the
local option law was defeated by a
majority of 170.

ing received word that their nephew
Mason Crooner, who lived with the
latter north of the city for a number
of years, was drownod at Orovllle,
Oil., last Sunday. No particulars of
the drowning were received but It Is
presumed that he fell through the Ice
while Bkating, the cold snap extend
ing that far south.
The remains will arrive in Eugene
Friday and will be Interred here.
Notice of the funeral will be given
later. The young man's friends here
will regret to hear of his untimely
death.
