today. His friends and admirers
throughout the country remembered
the anniversary with a flood of feli
citous greetings and good wisheB.
Admiral Dewey, despite his seven
dent of the general board he keeps
In close touch with all that the navy
does and It Is safe to say that no one
In the land has followed with closer
attention or keener Interest the pro
gress of the Atlantic battleship fleet
on Its trip around the world than
has the hero of Manila bay.
As admiral he Is always on the nc-
ty-one years, is in the full enjoy- j tive list, and unlike any other offl-
ment of robust health. With the ex
ception of a summer vacation at his
old home In Vermont he remains in
Washington the greater part of the
year. When in the city ne never
cer in the army or navy, cannot be
retired for age or any other cause.
At the same time he need not work
if he preferred to do nothing and as
long as he lives he will receive the
