Special Session for Next Week
Called to Enquire Into Al- ',
leged Blunder of Council
The East Eugene Push Club has
called a special meeting for next week
to consider and incidentally to in
quire into the alleged blundering of
the city council in its legal procedure
in the steps taken to instal a new wa
ter system for the city. Judging from
the statements of some of the club's
prominent members, It may be more
appropriately called an indignation
meeting, and if as a result of the
meeting it is found that the council
has acted under the advice of the city
attorney they propose to stand by the
former nnd use every just means to
stem and if possible overthrow the
obstruction policy that has so long
unreasonably prevailed.

Washington, Dec. 24. Such wrk
as the constructior. of miles of road
and trail, telephone lines, drift and
pasture fences, ranger houses and
barns, has opened up and improved
many sqr.ui'o miles of territory in the
thirteen national forests in tho state
of Oregon, and for these and similar
purposes $55,191.33 was spent dur
ing the last fiscal year. Four hun
dred and thirtyiseven miles of trail
and 24 miles of road were built, 7S
miles of telephone lines were scrung,
and the forest ranges were improved
oy tne construction of 39 miles of
pasture fence. During the year 23
houses, to be used for ranger quar
ters, and 2 barns, and 2 corrals, for
rangers' horses were built. Four
bridges were constructed and various
miscellaneous improvements war
made."
In speaking of the permanent Im
provement work on all the National
forests, the secretary of agriculture
has the following to say in his an
nual report:
The agricultural appropriation
act of 1908 included an Item of $500,-
000, which was made available for
permanent improvement work on the
National forests. The object of this
work is to help open up the forests to
more use and provide means for their
better and more 'economical protec
tion, through the supply of means
of communication and transportation,
wrll-located field quarters, fire lines,
fences to assist in the handling of
stock, and watering places. These
improvements are essentially Invest
ments of capital, which add greatly
to the value and usefulness of the
forests.
'"The work completed during the
yeiir included 3400 miles of trails,
3200 miles of telephone lino, 100
miles of wagon road, 0 miles of fire
lino, 250 bridges, 550 cabins and
barns, and 600 miles of pasture and
drift fences. In addition to the sum
provided by the special Improvement
fund, over $100,000 from the general
fund of the service was turned from
current expenses to defray the cost
of this work, but much of the work
planned and urgently needed could
not be carried out becouse there was
nothing with which to pay for it."
