TVbf Sisters
Now and ngain you see two women pass
ing down Ino street who look like sisters
You are ae'onished to learn that they are
mother and uauiitcr, and you realize that
a woman at forty or forty-five ought to be
at her finest and fairest. Why isn't it so?
The general health of woman is so in
timately associated with the local health
of the essentially ' feminine organs thtt
there can be no red cheeks and round
form where there is female weakness.
Women who have suffered from
. this trouble have found prompt
relief and euro in the use of Dr
' Pierce's Favorite Prescription. It gives vigor and vitality to the
organs of womanhood. It clear the complexion, brightens the
eyes and reddens the cheeks.
No alcohol, or habit-forming drills is contained In "Favorite Prescription."
, Any sick woman may consult Ur. Pierce by letter, frae. Every letter is
held as sacredly confidential, and answered in a i l:un envelope. Address:

New College Paper.
Announcement has been made that
Immediately after the holidays a new
college paper will be published on
the campus. The unique name is the
Midnight Doughnut, and Issues will
be published twice a week with an
occasional extra. Trie policy of the
publication will be witty news. Two
sample issues have already appear
ed, which pleased highly the limited
number who received conies. The
paper does not state who is the editor
or the publisher, and that feature of
it seems to be a mystery.

Physician Frank G. Scammell is still
of the opinion that he will be able to
set at rest the dispute that a man
who has died in the electric chair
does not die there, but under the
knife of the surgeon at the subse
quent autopsy. But according to the
authorities the physician is not like
ly to have a chance to test his the
ory next Monday, as he had planned
to do, In the case of John Mantas
anna, who Is to be electrocuted in
the state prison on that date. .
The prison officials have decided
to be guided by the opinion of the
eminent legal authorities who have
told them that if they lent themselves
to the proposed experiment of Dr.
Scammell they would be liable to in- !
I dictment and impeachment for mal-1
feasance in office. Head Keeper Os-
borne of Mie state prison, declares !
that he does hot propose to get him- I
self into any trouble with such ex-1
' periments. He lias therefore decid- j
ed that Dr. Scammell will not be in '
' vited to the electrocution of Manias-.';
i anna. The electrocution will be de
; forred until evening and the keeper
will not turn the body over to the
physician until the next morning,
when there will be no possibility of
his resuscitating the victim of the
death chair.

While freely admitting that within
the last few years several thpu'sand
dollars have been expended ln im
proving the Medical Department of
the University of Oregon, and that
Its standard of excellence has risen
appreciably, leading members of the
profession in Portland declare that
for a lengthy period the institution
has been a "fake" and a "joke," and
that It has always been and is now
being conducted almost entirely in
tho finannlal interest of Pr. Simeon
B. Joseph!, manager and dean of the'
faculty, and a few others.
Their contention is that without a
state appropriation ' which will at
least permit the institution to be
brought up to the standard of second
class Eastern medical colleges, it is
useless, and that unless the legisla
ture can be prevailed upon to grant
an appropriation of sufficient size it
should be abolished. To continue the
college longer under present condi
tions' it is maintained, would be noth
iui; More tlian an imposition on the
public, which is represented as al
ready suffering severely because of
the "palpable fraud" which they al
lege is perpetrated by sending forth
as practitioners a horde of persons
without the rudiments of the medi- i
cal and surgical knowledge necessary
Tor life-saving and health-preserving
work,
;. Institution Vmler Ban.
In this connection. It is pointed out
that the Medical Department of the
University of Oregon is now under
the ban of the American Medical
association, and that its name has
been expunged from the lists of this
Institution. According to Secretary
Colwell, whose letter is now In the
possession of Dr. A. C. Panton, who
recently resigned his position as pres
ident of the Oregon State Board of
Medical Examiners, this action was
taken by the association because of
the persistent refusal of Dr. Josephl
to furniBh It with data as to the en
trance requirements which must be
met by students.
That several medical men of high
standing at present have attended
the college is admitted, but it is de
nied that the knowledge and training
acquired by them as an equipment
for practice came ln the main irom i
that institution. Other sources or !
supplemental Institutions are given
that credit. It is a noteworthy fact
that among Its most drastic critics i
are a, number of physicians who were I
at some period Btudents in the Medi
cal Department of the University of
Oregon. Telegram.
