Because Who cornerstone of Eaton
hall, at Willamette University, was
missed yesterday morning before the
ceremonies attendant on the corner
stone laying, and because there are
liable to be investigations and prob
ably expulsions, some' of the students
intimate that the members of the Or
egon University Glee Club, who were
here Tuesday night, may know some
thing of the prank., says the Salem
Statesman.
The missing cornerstone caused
considerable trouble among the fac
ulty members and the sheriff's force
was called. The stone was located
under a pile of lumber.
The students also tied a cow in the
University chapel, all of which mate
rially assisted in a successful corner
stone laying and subsequent services
in the chapel. . , - - .

William R. West has purchased
the lodging house business above the
Nlcklln store at East Ninth and Oak
streets and will conduct It in con
nection with his Square Deal restau

The Albany high school debating
and basketball teams will arrive here
tonight on the local. The debate will
occur at the high school assembly
room tomorrow afternoon at 2:30
o'clock and the basketball game In
the armory at 7:30.

The Portland, Eugene & Eastern
trolley car No. 3, was sent to Al
bany today to be used on the com'
pany's new line there. J. W. Bar
ringer and his force of men worked
till 10 o'clock last night to load the
car on a Southern Pacific car in order
that it might go out last night or
early this morning, but it was
thought. best to further secure it so
it would not rol off, so Its departure
was delayed,
E.'C. Hasse, one of the two men
who were arrested at Canyonvllle a
few days ago charged with the theft
of a team and buggy from Tom Bal
ley'B livery stable in this city was
given an examination before Judge
Bryson, of the justice court this af
ternoon. As there was no evidence
to Indicate that he was Implicated in
the theft, he was discharged from
custody. Al Pander, who hired the
rig and was caught with Hasse Is
now in the county Jail awaiting trial

ance is giving at the Bell theatre
each evening. The house is crowded
at .every performance and everyone
who sees the show Is well satisfied
