THE WAY OP LIFE.
The cup of Joy is a great, wide cup brim full of the rarest wine;
And many a lip will come and alp the Bweetest of drafts with thine;
But you who have tasted the dregs of life I fathom the thought
you think:
The cup of sorrow Is made so narrow that only one heart can drink.
The path of pleasure is broad and smooth and leads through a love-
ly land,
And he who shall stray that happy way can find him a merry
band;
But well you know who have walked with woe, and a smile have
' sought In vain,
. That he goes alone with tears and moan who follow the path of
Pain- 1 f NIXON WATERMAN.
The query that is confronting most of the people at this par
ticular time of the year is how and where to obtain Christmas
money. But Rockefeller and his associates in the Standard Oil
are not at all bothered in this way. On a capitalization of a mil.
lion dollars that concern earned $55,000,000 in seven yean
,wnn us inoiana uompany, wnicn will give each of them enough
at least to buy a turkey for the Christmas dinner and perhaps
leave enough to get the children a stick of striped candy all

Congressman J. Adam Bede, of Minnesota, who fell by the
wayside last month, says : "If we should preach what ought to
be preached, wo would be assassinated." J. Adam is a humor

Andy Carnegie recently said? "The president is always in
teresting." And, if his memory harked back a bit, he doubtless
added mentally, -'even when he is aggravating.
Though the rich are always abused, there isn't a man jack
ot us all who does not want to be rich. Yet none of iis love abuse
Can you figure that out? "
1 A Vermont legislator would bankrupt a lot of people if he had
Tiis way. He wants to make the giving of false news to a news
jpaper punishable by a fine!
Probably the New Jersey man who took thirty baths in thir
teen hours was trying to wash off the taint of Standard Oil.
ATHLETICS PREFERENCE '
OVER LITERARY WORK?
Editor (lunrd: An article Inst ev

basketball game would be held Fri
day evening so the business men
could attend. ,
Porhnps It Is not commonly known
that the dobat.e betweeu Albany and
Eugene was bIro changed so as to
favor ho basketball gnme. The de
bate was billed for Friday night but
the ball game was given the prefer

day afternoon. Of course this ar

Faction At University Have
Long Wanted to Abolish Re

Becaase the Multnomah Athletic
club may play O. A. C. on Thanksgiv
ing, Oregon students are laughing up
their sleeves. In case the directors
of the Mu.lt nomah club Bhould break
the annual tradition, the -belief would
exist in the minds of many University
students, that they did so to spite
Oregon for not consenting to play the
O. A. C. game In Portland. With this
conception as a lever on the athletic
council those students and those
members of the faculty, who for
many years have wished to abolish
the annual contest with the clubmen
would stand an excelent chance of
carrying out their long denied desire
and the Uregon-Multnomah game
would be no more.
Oregon students are perfectly sat
isfied to continue the old precedent.
ine game has been a good money
maker, and though the local contests
now also pay well, the heavy
ceipts of the great Thanksgiving con
test is a welcome addition to the
student body funds, and in every
year in tne past has been depended
upon to keep the student body out
or dent.
A feeling, nevertheless, has arisen
mac it is not rignt to play mere
youth against grown and developed
meni much more experienced in the
tricks and much heavier In weight.
The great difference in size and
strength was especially remarked by
people at tne last contest. Some of
the best physicians In Portland said
that the Idea of playing mere strln
lings against such men was absurd.
and that serious Injury is likely to
result at any time to the collegiate
team. For this reason the college
stuaents are listening to the Mult
nomah gossip In a not altogether dis
appointed manner, for such an action
on the part of Multnomah as a vol
untary abandonment of . the Oregon
game, will throw all the bame on
the clubmen for the break In the ath
letic relations.
