Sheriff Bown Investigating

rience of Dead Man
TBe following U from the Portland ,
Journal, concerning the mjmtory I
surrounding the death of Jacob
XUthewg, who was found In the cab- j
In on the Walker place a week ago '
Sunday:
Made acquainted with a strange
woman bv a lorn! mitHmnni.i t...-
eau, or Introducing biirfau, as It Is
; advertised, Jacob Mathews left t'ort
! land a few days aito and went down
to Lane county to meet the woman.
Last Saturday night he was found
dead in a lonely cabin In that count v '
and now It is believed he was pois
oned. Mathews, who is an old man. Is
said to have had some money, which
: was probably why he was murdered.
It Is not yet known who is the wom
i an suspected of complicity In the
poisoning nor has the name of the '
, matrimoninl bureau yet been ascor-
; tained. Sheriff Bown of Lane coun-,
1 ty Is in Portland today endeavoring
! to find out thpon ihlim ...... i...,. !
called upon local police to help him. I
There are several of these bur-'
eaus In Portland, the ostensible ob-i
ject of which Is to bring together'
fond hearts which beat aloiro aud to
promote matrimony, uut It Is said i
that some of them have drifted away i
from their original purpose and will
Introduce one to any person he de
sires to meet, asking no questions. !
It Is suspected that Mathews fell
Into the hands of some of these
sharpers and was betrayed by a wo
man to his death.
