ing the republic in a state of defense.

Wfllemstadt, Deo. 14. The seizure of tbe Venezuelan ooast
guard ship Alexis by the Dutch cruiser Gelderland revealed the
fact that the Alexis carried only six rifles in poor condition and a
small quantity of ammunition. Tho captain of the Alexis declared
that his -vessel was a merchant steamer, but a passenger on
board said sho was a coast guard vessel, and a search of the cap
tain's effects brought forth her pennant, furnishing final proof.
