. Washington, Deo. 11. The sub-committee of the commit-:
tee on appropriations has instituted an inquiry in the matter of
razing the old Pennsylvania depot, located on the Mall until last
summer, wfien President Roosevelt ordered it torn down. Colo-!
nel Charles S. Bromwell, military aide to tho president, when
asked, said he had torn the building down on instructions from
the president. He stated that he had called the attention of
"the higher authorities" to the fact that there was no law to
provide for the sale of property of the Unitod States, but that be
was orderod to tear down the building. Bromwell stated there
.was no reason for its removal except to improve tho landscape.
The committee also went into the appointment of a commis
sion on country life, "as created without authority of law."
