Joe Jacobs, the Chamelton street
merchant who a few days a.-o was
given the maximum sentence of 30
days In jail and a fine of 1 500 for

against him. This makes fines ag

Charley (J. T.) Witter, who for
t merly ran a saloon In Kugene, Inter
' being, engaged In the smite business
at Springfield and afterward run
ning a "blind pig" there, according
to his plea of guilty entered this
morning, was arrested last evening
on the charge of violating the lornl
option law. He was brought up for
, sentence this morning at 10 o'clock.
.Judge Harris stated that inasmuch as
j Witter had gone out of the business
i and had been out Rince Inst April and
as he was neither directly or Indirect
ly Interested in the business at the
present time and on account of his
old age 76 years he was Inclined
to be lenient and fixed his fine at
250. Witter stated to the judge
That he was entirely out of the bus
iness and expected to stay out. As
he acompanled his attorney. L. Bll
yeu, out of the courtroom, he burst
Into tears, eliciting the sympathy of
the onlookers. Witter was always
a law-abiding cltlien as a saloon
. keeper but, like many others In the
same business, he kept on selling
1 liquor after the local option law
' went Into effect.
