It is well to dwell In the sleepy realm
Of the valley called content:
Where no ono Is troubled by wild desire
From another kingdom sent;
But sometimes a heart, if weary,
Will long for the limitless Beft,
Or the endless stretch of the desert
Where all of Ood's creatures are free.
t
I am tired of the cramping corners,
Of the choking, closing walls,
Of my cage with Its bolted shutters
When the cool, sweet nighttime falls.
I would so to the end of the rainDow,
The place whore the seas begin,
'-.. To the first sand heap on the desert,
' Where nothing Is reckoned as sin. .

. By order of the New York park authorities, so the newspa
pers tell us, a census of the squirrels in Central Park was taken
jthe other day. Many years ago squirrels were so numerous in
'Central Park and their number increased so rapidly, that it was
inecessary to shoot a large number' every year to prevent
'them from becoming nuisances. It was ascertained by the cen
sus that the number of squirrels had greatly decreased during
jithe last two years, so much, in fact, that it will be necessary
: ,tO restock Central Pork with squirrels next year. Two reasons
are given to account for this decrease in the number of squir
rels. The squirrels are fed so liberally by visitors that they have
practically abandoned their way of living like wild creatures.
They have become lazy and inactive and enervated by their op
ulent way of living. The result has been that the squirrels do
not pair at all or, if they do, they raise much smaller families
' than heretofore. Another cause of their decline in numbers is
(hat hundreds of them are run over and killed or crippled by
automobiles every year. The squirrels have become fat by over
feeding' and are no longer able to avoid automobiles going at a
rapid clip. All this teaches a powerful lesson, as it illustrates
how unavoidably luxury and hyper-civilization will lead to race
-suicide. The families of great wealth in the United States and
elsewhere, but more ao in this country than in .Europe, are rap
ndily gravitating toward extinction. Their complete extinction
"can be prevented only by the infusion of new blood, not the blue
blood of aristocracy, but the healthy, strongly pulsating red
2)lood of vigorous manhood.
. '-The last annual message of President Boosevelt, printed in
'today's Guard, as is usually the case with the chief executive's
state papers, quite lengthy. It treats all the principal subjects
- especially the topics relating to corporations and labor, in the
' exhaustive, argumentative fashion that has characterized the
'president's utterances on the same topics for four years past.
He presents no new ideas, and it is safe to say the message will
'. receive little attention. It is too long for the average reader to
-peruse it carefully.
"From, the number, of magazine and newspaper writers, at
home and abroad, engaged in showing that the Panama canal
'will never pay, it might be supposed that a conspiracy to give
Uncle Sam cold feet was doing business somewhere.
Perhaps it is because he is seeking a warmer climate than
'he finds at the Italian court since his marriage with the Elkins
millions was declared off, that the Duke de Abruenl is thinking
f 'another: dash for the north pole.

' Well, yes, it does seem queer that Walter Wellman should
have overlooked so many better chances at home and brought a

J. H. Commings, a well
