New Game Law Being Framed
for Introduction at NSxt
Session of Legislature
I Officers of the Oi-vkoii Fish and
. Game Association will propose exten
j slve amendments lo the existing'
- game laws of the stale at the com-:
' ing session of 'the Leslslature. A
'committee, representing (he Asaocla-'
; tlon, of which A. K. liebhardt is sec-
: retary, Is revising the various soc-
tions of the codo wlih reference to
; the protection of fish and game, it
! is the purpose of the committee to
simplify the stale's statutes on this
subject so that the bv.thkix cltlien by
reading the law will be able to place
an iutelllgent construction on Us pro
visions. "The committee expects In about
two weeks to complete the first draft
of the law as wo will seek to have It
amended," said Mr. (iebbardt yester
day. "We are lakins considerable
pains and dovotliiK a great deal of
our time that laws which will pro
tect our fish and game may be for
mulated for the consideration of the
suite's lawmakers. A mistaken im
pression prevails thnt those laws In
the past have been framed ill the In
terest of the city sportsman exclusive
ly rather than for the protection of j
the fish and game. In lis work the
committee is doing everything lu its:
power to dissipate that Idea. What la i
needed In this stale is legislation that 1
will protect and multiply the stale's:
; fish and game regardless of any sel-1
fish Interest. What Is more It Is the:
intention of the committee to suggest I
uniform laws that shall apply In all '
, counties alike. Kmlless coufuslon we i
' find has resulted from the laws as i
they are now constituted from the;
! fact that different restrictions are tin-
posed in practically every county of !
, the state." I
J In response to a gonornl demand
alike from the humors and the far-1
mpm tha rnmmlrtn. will Fannmmnn I
! n Inw Main llllatl IllfP ft Mnuud aonumt .if!
at leaBt two years fnr the protection
of the Chinese pheasant. Another law
will be suggested prohibiting tho kit
ling of elk for a period of five or bIx
years.
The Legislature also will be asked
to provide for a bounty fund on
crows, wolves and cougars. Between
crows and the animals named It is
asserted by members of the commit
tee thnt more birds and other game
are killed annually than by the
sportsmen. It Is for that reason the
committee believes the state should
make provision for this sort of pro
tection. Under the present law the
county courts are empowered, It
deemed expedient, to provide such a
bounty fund, but the members of the
committee feel that the expense
should be borne 'by the state directly
rather than by any one couuty or
group of counties since the benefits
following such a policy are state-wide
and not confined to the community
in wnlcu such a tax Is levied. Ore'
