It Beems that the articles appear
ing In the city papers in regard to
the extensive practice of cigarette
smoking in the high school has given
rise to some misunderstanding. The
fact that the authorities have found
it necessary to take action in regard
to the matter does not imply that ev
ery boy In the BChool is addicted to
the habit. As a matter, of fact only
a very small percentage of the stud
ents are the cause of this action.
Principal Hug, when Interviewed
this morning, said In regard to the
fact that the high school boys had, as
a whole, been misrepresented: .
"I believe that not more than one
tenth of the boys, that is, not more
than twenty are seriously addicted ta
the habit. However, I intend to do
all within my power to eliminate this
obnoxious practice." . '
' The school authorities are deter
mined that the standard of morals at
the Eugene high school shall be sec
ond to none, and are laboring with
unflagging zeal with that end in
view. ,
