This Is one reason why a pound of

Wonder How It All
Happened
- On Multnomah field, Portland,
Saturday, Nov. 21, 1908, O. A. C.
was defeated by the Oregon U, In
the presence of about 10,000 people,
says the Corvallls Times.
It's useless to attempt to make the
blow softer O. A. C. was "lammed,
skinned and jayhawked" by the Ore
gon U, and the score, 8 to 0 against
us, doesn't tell the story of how bad
ly' the orange and black was beaten.
The fact of the matter ib, O. A. C.
was never In tne game, did not even
get started, while Oregon was there
every minute of play, working like a
machine and quick to take advantage
of every opportunity, the u. A.
boys moved like they were in some
sort of a trance; apparently there
was no good team work, their Inter
ference was sad to look upon and at
no time was there any genuine ginger
displayed. When a ball was fumbled
an Oregon man hit the ground like a
flash and the ball was his; when
Clark punted, the Oregon nien went
down the field with a speed that put
them at the right place when Gagnon
had recovered the ball; when Wolf
punted, the Oregon men swept down
the field In perfect formation to help
Latourette return the ball twenty,
thirty, forty yards. Oregon played a
speedy, heady always-ln-lt game,
while O. A. C. never found itself. Had
Moullen not kicked the two field
goaIs,-had the score been 0 to 0, It
would still have been clearly appar
ent that Oregon outplayed O. A. C.
A Genuine Puzzle.
Just why it should have been thus
Is a matter of much conjecture. Just
why O. A. C, after a succession of
victories, should show such . poor
form and Oregon, after a series of
defeats, should suddenly develop into
a wonderful team, is well-nigh In
comprehensible. Many theories are
advanced. For Instance:
George McMillan says O. A. C. was
"overtrained," perhaps, that on two
or three occasions poor judgment
was used, and that the perfect phys
ical condition of Oregon's men had
much to do with victory.
Umpire Hockenberry said: "The
Corvallls players never seem to find
their feet when playing against .Ore
gon." Coach Forbes, of Oregon, said his
team had never played In such form
and the victory was a surprise to
him.
Coach Norcross says, "O. A. C.
didn't seem to be able to get into the
game concertedly."
O. A. C. enthusiasts say the bad
day was responsible, . that Wolff's
poor physical condition the past two
weeks was responsible, that the team
was stagestruck, that the Injury to
both ends, Cady and Dobbins, so ear
ly in the game, took the spirit out of
the boys, that O. A. C was over-confident
and were so thoroughly, sur
prised that they couldn't get togeth
er and so on and on. Whatever It
was that conspired to cause O. A. C.
to put up a poor game, it must be
admitted that Oregon could not have
won had she not put up a better
game. And Oregon did play a great
game. O. A. C. rooters, even when
their hearts were sick, could not but
enjoy the splendid work of the men
from Eugene. And like good losers,
the bunch that had rooted incessant
ly for O. A.. C, gave the victors a
rousing cheer.
It's folly to rehash the details of
the game. Every man, woman and
child who really cares for football
has read the ten column accounts In
the Portland dallies and really, the
detail isn't cheering. Let us forget
last Saturday in the hope that Thurs
day's game at Seattle will result dif
ferently. PROMINENT ALABAMA
