idents of the senates and speakers of
the houses of representatives of each
state, and members of congress and
eight lay delegates-at-large appointed
by the ! governors of their respective
states, was called to .order by Gover
nor Guild of Massacnusetts at me
Tremont theatre today. The object
of the conference, which was called
together by Governor (Julia, ana

days. Is the consideration and discus
sion of the various resources of the
New England states and of the best

to the consideration of tree planting,
Glfford Pinchot, chief of the forestry
service of the United States Depart
ment of Agriculture, spoke on the fu
ture of forest trees In New England.
Professor John Craig, head of the
department of horticulture at Cornell

the subject of orchards in New Eng
land and the great opportunity for
fruit culture In the New England

The mornine session tomorrow,
which will be opened with prayer by
Archbishop O'Connell, will take up
the subject of the preservation and
cultivation of shellfish, now rapidly
vanishing from the New England
states. Professor Francis Hobard
Her rick, of the department or Dioiogy
at the Western Reserve University,
Cleveland, Ohio, will read a paper
on lobster culture. Dr. George Wil
ton Field, chairman of the Massacnu
setts fish and game commission, will
speak on the growth and preservation
of oysters, clams, quahaugs and scal

held tomorrow afternoon, will be de
voted to the consideration of high

of Daniel M. Hutzen and his daugn
ters, Evelyne, aged 11, and bldera,
aged 9; that they saw Mrs. Gunness
and a' strange man on July 9, though
they were unable to distinguish her
features because of the thick veil
she wore. They are positive they
could not be mistaken. Hutzen de
clared he tried to follow the couple,
but' they got ahead : of him and he
was not likely to-follow too closely
for fear of "getting a chunk of lead.
John Anderson testified that he
saw .Mrs.. Gunness Saturday ef're

some drinking. Before Ryckman
left, one of the men gave him some
of the wine and on the way home ne

know anything until the next day.

ernorship and wjll be succeeded by
Lieutenant - Governor Garst,. wnen
the new general assembly meets In

mins will be elected to the senate for

After the killing Miss Koten col
lapsed and for -a few days her Hie
was despaired of. 1 Because of her
condition'-she was removed from the
Tombs to the city hospital on Black
well's Island. , There, on September
26 last, she gave birth to a cniia.
