It certainly will do the stateof Oregon no good and will not
assist in the betterment of public and private morals for a lead
ing newspaper of the state, like the Oregonian, to openly advise
public officials to violate pledges signed voluntarily and filed
with the records of the state. The Oregonian had a perfect
right to urge these men not to sign the pledges in question, but
since they have done so its only honorable course as a newspa
per would be to insist that they now be carried out to the let
ter. Broken pledges are too common among office holders to
be in any manner advocated, or even condoned, by the press,
which should seek to elevate the standard of political morals.
'Reports of a great decrease in the death rate among babies
this year come from New York city; yet it has been a trying
summer. The lives saved are the fruits of the Tenement House
Commission, the City Health Department and the warfare of
the Merchants' Association committee against the house fly. We
are learning slowly that the protection of life, which the govern
ment regards as its business, means protection against the num
erous armies of germs that live in the predaceous empire of dirt
The great railroad news, printed a couple of days ago in
The Ouard, is confirmed in the following item from the Klamath
Falls Herald: "Work was commenced this afternoon by a party
of S. P. surveyors under Engineer Rankin and Field Chief E. E.
Avery on the permanent location of the survey for the extension
of the railroad from Klamath Falls to Natron, near Eugene.
Work is to continue all winter and Engineer Rankin has estab
lished his headquarters here."
The clubwomen of Texas are making an indignant protest
because women prisoners have recently been set to work on the
rock pile at Fort Worth. They say that since women are not
allowed to have an equal voice with men in making the laws
which they are forced to obey or to act as jurors, they should
not receive the punishment meted out to nen for the same crime.
Wall Hlrcet indications are that the high financiers have de
cided that the lambs are in proper condition for another whole
sale shearing. Their notion of prosperity is now,' as it has al
ways been, jug-handled.
Maybe the Now York lerjelRture will tend as big-brained a
man as Elihu Root to the United States senate, but it has been
a long time since it did such a commendable thing.
Still, it iB difficult to convince the man who has just failed
in several frantic efforts to make a quick "touch" that confi
dence has been completely restored.
Where gun-toters are numerous there street shoot-ups are
bound to be pulled off once in every so often. The remedy is

WILL PLANT AN
ORCHARD INSTEAD
OF BUILDING MILL
The Guard yesterday stated upon
reliable authority th'it the Palmer
Company Intended going ahead with
Its sawmill enterprise on Ue tract of
land purchased two years ago two
two miles below the city, but It Is
learned today from another source
that the land Is being cleared of
trees and brush for the purpose of
setting out a 60-acre apple orchard.
The Guard's Informant claims to
have received his information direct
ly from the owners of the tract. Ac
cording this the sawmill enterprise
has been given up or else the plant
will be built on some other tract that
the company ownB in this vicinity.
Honore Palmer, the young Chica
go millionaire, who is at the head of
the company, reenntly purchased
some fruit lands In the Rogue River
Valley. He has seen the profits to
be made off of apples In Oregon and
by planting the tract Hear Eugene to
the fruit, he will have a larger rev
enue still from the product.
A part of the tract owned by the
Palmer Company is wooded, but with
the aid of a donkey engine, as men
tioned in yesterday's -Guard, it will
not take long to clear the land. As
this has never been under cultiva
tion It will be very rich and will be
especially adapted to apple culture.
There Is also quite an acreage of
cleared and cultivated land in the
tract.

TO LOVERS OF GOOD COFFEE
W. M. GREEN,
All coffee mills heretofore used
will only crush the berry, mutilating
the minute oil cells, allowing the cof
fee oil to evaporate, thus impairing
the strength and flavor.
By this new process the little oil
cells remain unbroken, the essential
oil (food product), cannot evaporate,
and the cofree retins its fine, rich, ar
omatic flavor in its full strength.
This is one reason why a pound or
coffee cut in this mill will onake from
ten to fifteen cups more of full
strength coffee than will any coffee
ground the old way. The lover of
good coffee finds here a richness of
flavor never found in coffee ground
in the ordinary way at any price.
Another feature about this mill Is
that you may have your coffee cut as
fine as the finest sand, and it will
still be practically free from that fine
dust which is produced by the old
method of grinding.. You will, there
fore, always have a clear cup of cof
fee instead of a muddy effect a re
sult of using the old style mills.
Royal Cut jPoffoe Is also adaptable
for percolators or French Drip coffee
pots.
