WORK BEGINS 0N
PAU1ER GOM'PANY'S
SAWMILL SITE
Two Donkey Engines Used in
Clearing Land of Trees
and Stumps Build
in Spring
In all probability the Palmer Com
pany, which owns a large trace or
land below Bangs' park and abutting
on the S. P. railroad about two miles
below Eugene, will begin the erec
tion of Its sawmill plant there early
la the spring. The details of the en
terprise have previously been given
by The Guard and the people of the
city are well acquainted with the
Diana of the company, of which Hon-
ore Palmer, the young Chicago mil
lionaire, is the head.
Work was begun the first of tbls
week of clearing the mill' site of all
trees and stumps and the trees are
being converted into cordwood. Two
donkey engines, which were shipped
to the site more than a year ago,
when It was intended to go ahead
with the enterprise but operations
were stonned on account of the car
shortage and the poor market for
umber, are employed at the work or
felling the trees and grubbing out
the stumps.
While no definite information up
on the matter is given for publication
it Is generally thought that by this
work it Is meant that the mill will
be erected early next year.
EAGLES WILL BUILD
HOME IN SPRING
Will Put Up Brick Building on
Their Lot May Be Three
Stories High
Eugene Aerie, No. 275. Fraternal
Order of Eagles, is intending erect
ing a home of its own on its lot on
Willamette street near Fifth next
spring. Such is the talk among the
members of the aerie at present and
It Is thegeneral belief among them
that they will be able to put up a
building to cost $20,000 or more.
There is talk of a three-story block
but It may be that the building will
be only two stories high. It is. said.
however, that a majority of the mem
bers favor three stories and some of
them even four.
The aerie is experiencing a snlen-
did growth. During the past three
months 81 new members have been
Initiated into the lodge and the mem
bership is now nearly 300. It is ex
pected to reach the 400 mark by the
first of the year.
The aerie is in excellent financial
shape and has paid out several hun
dred dollars In sick and accident ben
efits during the past year.

The
General Demand
of the Well-informed of tho World has
always been for a simple, pleasant and
efficient liquid laxative remedy of known
value; a laxative which physicians could
sanction for family use because its com
ponent parts aro known to them to be
wholesome and truly beneficial in effect,
acceptable to the system and gentle, yet
prompt, in action. .
In supplying that demand with its ex
cellent combination of Syrup of Figs and
Elixir of Senna, the California Fig Syrup
Co. proceeds along ethical lines and relies
on the merits of the laxative for its remark
able success.
That is one of many reasons why
Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna is given
the preference by the Well-informed.
To get its beneficial effects always buy
the genuine manufactured by the Cali
fornia Fig Syrup Co., only, and for sale
by all leading druggists. Price fifty cents
per bottle.
