MARY L. BENTON.
Miss Mary L. Bentou of Fnrgo,
chosen by Governor Burke of North
Dakota to ac t as sponsor for the bat
tleship uuincd for her native state.
Qulncy, Mass., Nov. 10. Into the
waters of 'the Fore river, on whose
shores several of the finest ships of
the new navy" have been built,
there was launched today the great
steel hulk of what will be the for
midable battleship North Dakota.
The occasion was a notable one, as
the North Dakota is the first United
States 20,000 ton all-big-gun battle
ship of the Dreadnaught type. Built
by the Fore River Shipbuilding Com
pany, the big vessel is 60 per cent
completed, and will be turned over
to the government in less than a year.
The keel for the North Dakota was
laid on December, lu last, the date or
the sailing of the Atlantic fleet on
Its globe-encircling trip, and In her
construction all time records for the
building of American naval vessels
have been broken.
Numed by North Dakota Girl
Shortly before the hour set for tho
launching, while the wedces were be
ing driven in to lift the weight from
the ground to the sliding ways, the
naming party, led by Hear Admiral
Bowles, president of the shipbuild
ing company, made Its way through
the crowd and ascended the launch
ing stand. The sponsor, Miss Mary
Ilenlon, daughter of Colonel John D.
Benton, of Fargo, N. D., received an
ovation, as did also Governor John
Burke and other members of the
North Dakota party.
The launch of the big vessel was
entirely successful and was witnessed
by an immense crowd. When th

word fas given the great mass of
steel began to move majestically
down the greased ways for Its ini
tial plunge into its native element.
Miss Benton dashed against the prow
a bottle of wine decorated with the
national colors. As she did so, she
exclaimed in firm tones:
"I christen thee North Dakota.
A great wave of enthusiasm swept
over the crowd of spectators as the
christening ceremony was perform
ed. Down in the crowd and up on
the stand men and women waved hats
and handkerchiefs, while thousands
of throats joined in the wild cheer
ing which greeted the new queen of
the sea. Shrill whistle blasts from
the nearby factories and the fleet of
tug boats assembled in the river join
ed in the chorus, and almost drowned
the notes of the national anthem, va
liantly nlaved bv the band.
A Magnificent liattlcship
The North Dakota is a sister ship
of the Delaware, which is under con
struction at Newport News. The in
itial outlav for the huge Dattiesmp
was $10,000,000. Her guns alone
will cost about $1. 000, 000. She will
have a long forecastle deck, extend
ing from the bow almost to the cen
tre of the ship. The ten twelve-inch
guns will be arranged in five turrets,
two to a turret, the forward turret
being so located that the axes of its
guns will be twenty-four feet above
the water line, and just abaft of this
turret will be another, the barbette
of which wi.. be sufficiently high for
its guns to clear the roof of the for
ward turret.
Abait the break of the forecastle
deck, and also situated on the axis of
the ship, will be two more twelve-inch
gun turrets, the guns of the forward
turret in this pair firing over the roof
of the after turret. Abaft and near
the stern will be the fifth and last of
the big turrets. Naval men declare
that no navy in the world possesses a
ship of . the Dreadnaught type in
which the guns are better arranged.
For repelling torpedo attacks the
North Dakota will carry a secondary
battery of fourteen five-inch guns.
These guns are all to be mounted
broadside.
The yessel will be driven by tur
bines of 25,000 combined horsepow
er. These powerful turbines must
drive the powerful battleship through
the water at the rate of at least 21
knots an hour on the four-hours'
trial run, If the contract is to be ful
filled. The officials of the company
confidently assert that they will be
able to do this and go the government
one better, making at least' twenty
two knots speed. If this can be done
it will be a record to be proud of, for
It will eclipse the present world's
record of the' Dreadnaught, twenty
one knots, and that, too, for a con
siderably larger battleship.
The length of the North Dakota is
610 feet and beam 85 feet. Her com
plement will consist of nearly 900
officers and men.

A meeting of the subscribers to the
promotion fund of the Commercual
Club was held last evening and sev
eral matters of importance discussed.
The first matter to come up for con
sideration was the election of a board
of governors and resulted in the re
election of the old board.
Thft regular meetine of the club
followed the subscribers' meeting. Af Vi
ter the reading of the minutes the
call for reports was made. Free
Thomas, of the membership commit
tee, stated that he had sent out 316
letters, but as yet had received no ac
cessions to the membership.
The matter of the club's excursion
to Albany was then presented by Mr.
Hartog. He said that a good repre
sentation from this city would show
to the people of Albany a very pleas
ant courtesy. Mr. Hartog also urged
that a good representation of the,
club members accompany the football
team to Portland on the occasion of
the Oregon-O. A. C. game. Manager
McEwen, of the football team, stated
that the people of Corvallis have
made arrangements to accompany the
team from that city, and that.Eugene
ites should show the same spirit in
regard to the University. President
Campbell moved a resolution that it
be the sense of the club that as large
a contingent as possible should ac
company the Oregon team to Port
land and give them every encourage
ment possible. Motion passed with
out a dissenting vote.
Manager Hartog then made public
a request which he had received that
the club send to the authorities at
Washington a request that the mate
rial for the new federal building be
white brick instead of red, as the
specifications called for. On a call
for opinions it was apparent that such
action was very likely to cause delay,
and the matter was dropped.
Mr. Hartog stated that the city
nlght'watchman had rendered a bill
to the Willamette Valley Company
for $8 for services In turning off the
lights in show windows and that the
company had refused to pay the
same. The matter was referred to
Walter Griffin for adjustment.
Mr. Hartog then read a letter from
Mr. McMurray at Portland, which
stated that this section could secure
from the department of agriculture
at Washington experts who would
make an analysis of the soil here
abouts and publish data with illus
trated maps. A motion requesting
the service for Lane county was pass
ed. President Williams followed Mr.
Hartog, stating that he had a mat
ter which he had been requested to
present a number of times the issu
ance of the $300,000 in bonds for the
taking over by the city of the water
system and the extension of the same.
He stated he considered it very prop
er for the club to Interest itself in
and to prevent, by injunction if nec
essary, any action of the council
which would place the city deeply
and unnecessarily in debt. After a
call for expressions of opinion only a
few present responded. It seemed to
be the prevailing opinion that the
subject was not a proper one for dis
cussion by the club at this time.
Manager Hartog offered a resolu
tion to the effect that the city coun
cil go ahead with all possoble dis
patch with the taking over of the wa
ter plant and the sale of such bonds
as were necessary for its purchase
and improvement. The resolution was
passed unanimously, after which an
adjournment was taken.
