night from a trip of several weeks
through the East. He took a post
graduate course in several branches
of medielno and surgery while gone

ington. Haltlmore, Chicago and other
largo cities. He states that there
was great interest In tho election In
the Kast. especially In New York
city. Tho excitement was intense for
some time before the election came
off, more so than for years past. The
financial condition in the East, the
doctor says. Is bad, but the further
west he came the better It appeared
to be, and the Pacific coast seems to
be In better shape than a.'iy other
section of the country. People In
general, however, expect that times
will gradually grow better from now
on, everything previous to the elec

Considerable number of East-
em Orders Come in Good
Many Hops Yet in the
Growers' Hands
The Oregon hop market is very
firm for choice goods. A considera
ble number of new Eastern orders
came in yesterday, but dealers found
difficulty in inducing growers to sell.
The feeling among holders is now
more bullish than ever, says the Ore
gonian. The most important transaction re
ported yesterday was the purchase
by the J. W. Seavey Hop Company of
110 bales from George L. Hose, of
Salem, at 8 cents. Mr. Rose still
has about 900 bales of his crop left.
Statistics that were compiled yes
terday show more hops remaining In
growers' hands than was expected.
According to the list, as drawn up
by local hop men, there are about
32,600 bales unsold :n the state, dis
tributed as follows:

Since the opening of the season the
shipments from Oregon have been
about 21,500 bales of new hops. It is
estimated that local and Eastern
speculators have bought and are
holding here some 11,000 bales.
There is no way of arriving at the
quantity of hops bought on orders
and taken in on contracts but not
shipped, but it is safe to say the
amount is more than thrice as large
as the speculative purchases to date.
The calculation, which to say the
least is a rough one, and subject to
plenty of revision, shows the follow
ing results:

The Hurd Co-operative Co. filed
articles of incorporation with the
county clerk this morning. The In
corporators are W. W. Neely, D. M.
Kemp. O. W. Hurd, J. C. Beck and
Phil Nleolle, all well-known residents
of the lower Slnslaw country. The
capital stock of the corporation Is
$25,000 and -the principal place of
business Is at Florence. This com
pany will build a salmon cannery to
replace O. w. Hurd s plant at Acme,
which was burned down during the
summer. As the name of the cor
poration Implies, the cannery will
be operated on the co-operative plan,
the fishermen on the river all own
ing stock and receiving their share
pro rata of the profits of the plant.
