BIG EXCURSION '
TO CAPITAL CITY
NEXT SATURDAY
High School Football Team Wil
Take Along Two Hun
dred Rooters
The list at the high school of those
who are going on the excursion to Sa-
luin next Saturday, November 7, has
passed the hundred mark and the
special rate, 2.1B for the round trip
Ib now assured.
The football game between Eugene
and Salom is recognized as the fast
est and most . important academic
game to be played this season in the
state. Eugene has not been defeated
by any team bo far. Salem has been
defeated only by Hill Military Acad
emy. Eugene is said to have this
year the strongest team that the
school has ever turned out. Salem
is keeping still, but reports from
there say that Bhe has the fastest ag
gregation that the school has sun
ported. It Is said that Salem has re
solved to win from Eugene this year.
if her team is unable to play any oth
er game afterward. The feeling
seems to be the same as between the
U. of O. and O. A. C.
The enthusiasm on each side grows
Intense. The local school will run
an excursion train to Salem with two
hundred rooters. Every night this
week the rooters aro practicing yells
and songs. Tho team is working
down new plays. In last Saturday's
game few plays other thnn straight
line bucks were used because it was
known that Salem supporters were
taking notes on the side lines, but in
the coming gamo some of the fast
est playing, equal even to the 'var
sity class, will be seen.
It seems that several business men
have asked If other than students
could take advantage of the excur
sion rate to Salem. This rate Is open
to nil. Persons intending going
their names beforehand to any high
school student, who will turn It over
to tho proper committee, as It will
enable the students to figure on the
number of cars wanted.
PETER SPAREM DEFENDS
OLD BILL OBEDIAH
(Speclnl Correspondence.)
Mapleton, , Nov. 2. In the Dally
Guard of ' ctober 27 Old Bill
Obediah gets a roasting from "Pur'
Ity." We must be cautious not to
speak heedlessly against any one, nor
testify to more than we know to be
true, but wo should show that Vain
talkers belong to the world, though
nu m hers clnss them among religious
people, to the injury of the same.
Mr. Editor, as Old BUI Obediah Is
very busy now looking after his fruit
and vegetables, I am now trying to
answer "Purity's" letter. Will say
that Old Bill Obediah and his family
have never attended a dance In the
state of Oregon, so this is falsehood
No .1, and the people who run the
Sunday school known as the Union
Sunday school dance all Saturday
night until Sunday morning. This,
Mr. Purity, Is He No. 2. Now In re
gard to drinking, we nil know that
Old Hill Obediah drinks nothing but
soft drinks, except it be spiked by
some one unbeknown to Old BUI
and In thiB case ho would be excusa
ble, and as for Old Bill bundling up
his family and going down the river
on a Sunduy high time, is, Mr. Purity
lie No. 3. Mr. Purity, you misquote
Old Bill when you Bay he classed us
all with himself as on the road to
hell. Ho Bald that we were all
pleached to the bottomless pit of
hell by a well, wo will call him an
other "Purity."
Mr. Editor, ono would think that
our town was a hard place by read
ing what Mr. Purity writes, but
thank the Lord we have one sinless
man hero. I heard him in public, say
he novor sinned, day or week, and
would place both feet on the Bible
and testify to the same If necessary
1 will frankly confess that he Is the
only one of this makeup In or near
Mapleton. We feel proud to have one
for it may be the cause of Mapleton
standing a while longer. Now, Mr.
"Purity Helps," I will chop off for
this time and let Old Bill Obediah
write when ho llkos.
Yours truly.
PETER SPAREM. ESQ.
