Every county in the state, with the
exception of half a dozen in Eastern
and Southeastern Oregon, in which
there are no complete high schools,
and every four-year high school and
academy in the state is represented in
the student body at the University of
Oregon, The registration is now 521,
which IS the greatest in the history of
the institution, and will be increased
o 600 by the registration at the open
ing of the second semester. Many
students enter at this time, complet
ing their work at the mid-year four
years hence. The registration of 521
includes only the departments of lib
eral nrts and engineering, and not
the departments of medicine and law.
If these were included the total would
be about 750. Fifty-three students
are registered from states outside of
Oregon, an indication of the large
number of people from other states
that are settling In the state. Mult
nomah county leads iu the number of
students, followed in order by Lane,

FIRST NUMBER OF
ENTERTAINMENT COURSE
The first number of the Buceel En
tertainment course will be given on
Monday, November 2, at the Central
Presbyterian church, when four
great musical artists will appear. The
lender of the quartette Is Forrest
Dabney Carr, the eminent basso cau
tante, late of the Maurice Gran
grand opera company, and he Is well
known throughout the United States
a3 an artist of exceptional ability.
Florence Gertrude Smith hris
charmed audiences in almost every
city of over 10,000 people by her
beautiful soprano voice. She, like
Mr. Carr, has had wide experience
In opera. Earl J. Plouts Is one of
the most talked of violinists of New
York city today. He has studied un
der Leopold Kramer of Chicago, and
Max llendrlx and Michael Banner of
New York, Edwin M. Shonnert. the
fourth of the company Is well known
to American lovers of music, having
played In many transcontinental
tours.
The Artist Trio, appearing Novem
ber 27, Is one of especial merit, in
cluding Mary Agnes Doyle, whose
"Mr. Dooley" sketches are very tak
ing; Flora McGlll, contralto and
pianist, soloist In one of the leading
churches In Chicago; and Blanche
Deerlng. master of the violin and pi
ano. The program presented by the
trio of artists is unusual. Including
readings, violin solos, piano solos and
duets and contralto solos with violin
obligatos.
"Acres of Diamonds," the lecture
that Russell Conwell will deliver
hero on January has been delivered
twenty-six hundred times in twenty
nine years. Cromwell Is the head of
Temple University, a great night
school for the poorer people of Phila
delphia; he is a founder and promo
ter of hospitals.
Alton Packard, here March 25, Is
first of all a cartoonist, but he is ver
satile and gives an evening's enter
tainment full of fun-making and
music, nnd knows when to stop.
During the Easter vacation period
the Iowa College Glee Club of Grln
nell will come to this college town
to win honors away from the Oregon
glee. This Is a well trained organi
zation and will render music well
worth the hearing.
Governor Folk, being the best
known to the people of Eugene, will
probably be one of the best attrac
tions of the winter's course, and May
15 will be looked forward to with
much Interest. "Soldlerg of Peace."
will be his theme.
The Bucel entertnlnment course Is
being promoted by the young peo
ples' organizations of six of the Eu
gene churches, with the purposo of
bringing in some first class enter
tainment. It Is the intention to con
tinue the course from year to year If
It Is sufficiently patronized.

Several new families have arrived
In Springfield from the East this
week and are here with the intention
of permanently locating. So far two
of the families have been unable to
rent houses and are stopping at the
hotels. At present houses are very
scarce and It is almost liupossibel for
the new comer to find a place to stop
for the winter unless he wishes to
camp out in the rain.
