Facts learned by Shentf Stevens
and his deputy in Portland this morn
ing make It practically a certainty
that 13. D. McLean; of Eugene, now In
custody at Vancouver. Wash., on sus
piciou of being tile nss:issin of Hut-'
terworth, is innocent of the crime.
Philip Hosuinny, wh'n conducts a;
pawnshop at 26 Nnnh Third street, '
has informed them that at 1:10
o'clock Tuesday night a man giving
the name of B. 1. .McLean, and an- i
swerlng to the description of the ;
prisoner exactly, ' was in his shop.!
The pawnbroker was not "led" by!

and it then contained no loads. He

carried the money in ii buckskin

; The description given by the pawn
i broker fils McLean exactly, and the
, revolver and purse louud on him
are the same kind as mentioned by
Hiisnmiiy. Harry Morrlsey, proprie
tor of the New Grand Central Hotel,
i informed Deputy Leonard that he
knows McLean, ns the prisoner said.
I but not intimately. A search of the
grip left at the hotel ivvcal'Ml thai
it contained only an old oven-oat and
a pair of patent leather shoes, Just as

Taking these fai ls ami information
received from Eugene in conjunction
with the fact that Hutterworth was
shot with a ball from a .32-calilre
revolver, while the calibre of .Mc

do not hesitate to say they believe

affair.
