This will give tlvcontractors very little time in which to
igure on the building. O
The increased appropriation for the building is $70,00. Ac
cording to the specifications furnished by the governmeQ ar
chitect at Washington the estimated cost of the building is
$55,000, the rgiainder of the appropriation to be used for
boxes and other fixt Q:s.
The plans were given a lmsty examination by a Guard re
porter this morning. In the basement will be a large boiUi
room, three storage rooms ajd a fuel room. Tho first floor
plan is about the same as that in the drawings of the building
; proposed before the increased ajvropriation was secured.
There will be two entrances, one from Willamette street and the
other at the southeast corner of the bulling, leading from Sixth
street. Upon entering the building from either entrance one
ill find himself in a large lobby which will have a colored mar-
ble floor and marble baseboards. Immediately off Mm the
lobbv to the west is-the work room, 29x43 Oct in dimensions.
The money order and registry divisions will be located in the
northeast corner of the buildingP and this room will be 16
feet 11 inches by 26 feet in dimensions. Back oP this room to the
west are vaults and back of the vaults is the mailing vestibule,
12 feet square. The postmaster's office is located in the south
west corner of the building afll it i9l7 feet frinohes square.
Tho sQond floor, which will be occupied by tho forest ser
vice, iPdivided off into six large rooms, one of whiclAvill be
the "swing" room for the city adn rural mail carriers. Tho
others are not designed. There will bo closets, vaults, etc., on
this floor. The front elevation of the building shows a hand-
: soma structure, much itre handsome than the one-story build
i itio- that was proposed uiidcthe old appropriation. The height
'of tfre building will be 46 feet from the ground to the top of
the roof, which will be of tin. O
VThe building will be of pressed brick with(jtonc trimmings,
and the plans indicate that it will he of splendid design. Gran
ite steps wilflead to the entrances. , O
The building will be located 24 feet from Willamette street
and 28eet from Six street. The grounds, when the build
ing is completed, will be parked.
