from the press a "Handbook of Eng
lish Composition," by Luella Clay
Carson, professor of rhetoric and '
American literature in the Univer
sity of Oregon. Some of the lead-1
Ing educators and educational papers
of the country commend the work'
very highly, the "Journal of Kdu-i
cation," tlstonl saying: Never
before has there been available In go
usable a way so much that Is indis-:
pensable to every writer of good Eng
lish. It is as valuable as a first-class '
pocket dictionary. It has but to bet
een to be used." The Seattle Post-;
Intelligencer also commends i he S
work as follows: "The preparation!
of copy for the printer Is treated in
a chapter constituting In Itself an ex
cellent 'style sheet,' which might be
adopted with advantage by the news
papers of the state of Washington,"
We have had "revision" and "re
duction" of the tariff for many
months, and now Senator Burroughs
steps to tne front with "readjust
ment," which he says everybody fa
vors. True, out not tne same kind.
"Readjustment" Is a word of many
meanings.
The constitutionality of the Okla
homa bank deposit guarantee law is
to be passed upon by the I'nlted
States supreme court. Seems a pitv
that the decision could not have been j
handed down before the election, al-;
though It may be best as it Is.
It's all In the point of view. An J
actress was given a $700 automo
bile sby a Xew York broker, who is
now figuring in criminal bankruptcy
proceedings, and says: "I don't see
anything remarkable in a gentleman
giving a lady a motor ear."
Speaking of railroads and their
employes. Magnate B. F. Yoakum
said: "We are a happy family."
Mighty glad to hear that, even if
some of the members of the famlly
are not In a position to O. K. it.
' "The people are covered with
shame," shrieks Dr. Day of Syracuse.
Can't speak for all of them, bTt those
hereabouts have no such covering,
and no man dares to put it over
them.
Though the football season has
not yet forally opened, it has one
death to Its credit. Waterbury,
Conn., furnished the victim, whose
spine was broken in practice.
While everybody Is willing to ad
mit that fighting Is wicked, most of
us cannot resist cheering the contest
ants in a real lively scrap.
