Samples were taken on September
3d and 24th. These samples were ta
ken in bottles that 1 had previously
thoroiiRhly sterilized and kept air
tight until at creeks. For filling the
bottles I used the same precautions
by cleansing my hands and handling
the corks with a sterilized instru
ment. The bottles were sealed at
place of filling and expressed to des
tination, for which you will find re
ceipts enclosed.
The first examination at Corval
lis was delayed more than two weeks
on account of the absence of the bac
teriologist, and because of this de
lay there was not a true test made,
but still no disease producing bacilli
were found.
1 again procured a sample on Sep
tember 2Sth and stut to Corvallls
This, as you will see. gives an ex
cellent test of pure water.
The examination by the State
board of Health of Washington Is
very complete, but shows a little ex
cess ot vegetable matters ) which no
aouni explains the suggestion ot the
advisibllity of nitration , which was
due to the length of time water was
examined after being taken from the
streams, but no disease producing
germs were found.
1 am at a loss to account for the
report of our own state bacteriologist
in saying that the streams were con
taminated with sewerage producing
organisms. As a result of the other
examinations and the fact that there
is no habitation on the streams, 1
very much loubt the value of the
state's bacteriologist's report.
California did not make a report.
as you will see, owing to the time in
transportation, which wold cause
too much change taking place in the
water.

Dear Sir:
Your letter of the 4th Inst, and
samples of water have arrived. I
am sorry to say that a bacteriological
examination ot a sample of water
which had been shipped so far would
be of no account whatever to you.
i ue cnauges mat iase place tn wa
ter during an interval of this length
would make any results that we
might obtain by an examination now
no index whatever of the condition
of tho water at Its source.
It Is possible that a chemical ex

would be of service to you. If you
will write to Professor (!. E. Coiby,
of this university, be can probabiv
give you some Information about the
matter.

the water w-as a week or ten days old
before the analysis was made, while
that at Corvallls was begun the day

Dear Sir: .' .
I have made a quantitative bacteriological analysis of the

the re tort to Mr. W. L. Cheshire.
The bacterial content is very low, 4i colonies being the av

Complaint Against Critic
Taking up the president's asser

support the Democratic, candidate.
Mr. Bryan charges that the president
w riled his sialenietil In such a way
as to claim the support of all the
