Representative John Sharp il
liafV has a m story ami this thin
it particularly good one. During
t)!e recent Mississippi gubcjatoriai
campaign the ,!ou- Jt'f' Truly was
one of the unsuccessful aspirants for
the majority suffri of hisijUllow-
citizens. Prohibition doctrines tig-,
ured in th an'l seemed 1
very import! to Methodist mini--- j
ter. The followin conversation I.-'
related: "Broher Truly." said the:
minister, I ant to asK you a qu.s
tion. Bid yu ever take a drink of
whisky?" "Before I answer that."
responded the wary Brother Truly.
I want to know whether it Is an In
quiry or an Irrvitatlon."
That was all a mistake of the
newspaper reporters in saying that
Taft and Foraker met and clasped
hands and agreed to forgive and for
get, while the old soldiers roared
rhelr approval. Teddy says it was
and emphasizes each word with a
flourish of the big stick and the
newspapers will now humbly admit
that their representatives at Youngs-
town were deaf and dumb and blind,
and that "nobody had nothin' to do
with nobody" or words to that ef
fect. Mr. Haskell, of Oklahoma, wanted
the facts tn regard to his connection
with the Standard Oil, and the result
reminds us of one of Champ Clark's
stories. He says that out in Wyo
ming, close to the public highway, is
a mound with a wooden slab at Its
head, upon which Is crudely carved
an epitaph reading: "He whistled
for the grizzly and the grizzly came."
Salem's mayor wants the capital
city to keep pace with the University
city in the matter of street paving
and other public Improvements.
Thus Eugene's good work is bearing
fruit in other communities, and the
city Is being accepted as the model
for all progressive towns In Oregon.
So now we must endeavor at all
times to live up to our reptatiou.
When It comes to handing out a
line of convincing talk the Philadel
phia girl who talked four masked
burglars into leaving a house they
had entered to rob must be a peach-
erlno, who could make good as a
spellbinder.
And along In the early days of
bleak November talking machine
dealers are sure to find themselves
with a lot of stock 011 hand that they
cannot give away, even to those who
are usually out to get something for
nothing.
It must be astonishing to the plain,
every day man, who has never had
the office Itch, to observe the things
some men say without blushing, in
order to try to get on the public pay
roll.
The poet 'who wrote "The melan
choly days are 'here" did not live in
Oregon. East Oregoniau. The
which would indicate that Eastern
Oregon is not a melon country.
Congressman Ames, of Massachu
setts, has perfected an airship. As he
has seen so many congressmen "up
in the air" it ought to be a riyer. if
it isn't.
We haven't noticed any politicians
falling over each other In their ef
forts to follow Mr. Bryan's example
and tell just how and wuere they got
it.
No other town in Oregon sh iw
so large a percentage of increase in
school attendance as Hugene. That's
going some.

Abraham Heaton Hobertson, who
has been nominated by the Demo
crats for governor of Connecticut,
was born In Xew Haven September
25, 1S50. His father was a former
mayor of that city. The younger
Kobertson received his education at
Yale and at the Columbia University
Law School, graduating from the last
named institution in IS 74. Soon af
ter beginning the practice of law in
his native state he was elected to the
Connecticut general assembly and re
mained a member of that body for
several years. From 1S87 to 189a
he was a judge of the probate court
in Xew Haven. Later he served sev
eral years as corporation counsel of
the city. He is regarded as a high
authority on corporation law, and
also on the subject of civil service as
applied to municipal government.
His nomination for governor of Con
necticut is not an entirely new honor
for him, as he was a candidate for
the same office on the Democratic
ticket four years ago and was de
feated. A SXAI" TO 1 lAffiK IV KSTATK.

time is now ripe to organize a labor
party in Canada, and that, by a bet

All the secretaries and business
