Seattle. Sept. 2:1. The lo-
eal I'uiied States signal corps
office has received the follow-
lug message from Wrangel.
where the cable steamer
llumsido has returned after
visiting the wreck of the Star
of llengal:
"On our arrival off the
scene of the wreck we found
the tugboat that remained In
the vicinity had rescued the
survivors, 27 In all. Onn hun
dred aud ten were drowned,
which Included nine white
men, the remainder. It Is un
derstood, being I'hlnese. Tho
vessel is a total loss."
MAXINE ELLIOTT, STAGE BEAUTY.
Reno, New, Sept. 22 Nat C. Good
win this afternoon, through his nt-
to. neys, filed a complaint praying for
a divorce fromhis wife, Bessie Hall
Goodv In, known before the fuot
llghts as Maxlne Elliott. The papers
in the rase are scaled and the noted
actor and his attorneys refused to dis
cuss the case In any details whatever.
No ot ier papers In the case havo as
yet been filed, and the exact nature
of the allegations are veiled in mys
tery. H ta stated, however, that the com
plaint tells ft story of Improper non
duct In the beautiful Maxlne's life on
the stage on two continents. It is
also rumored that Mrs. (loodwin Is
iroparing a complaint which will
contain aomo very gtnrtllntf allega
tions against the character of the Jo.
vlul Nat.
Coupled with the filing of tho pa
pers by Goodwin is the conjecture
that' il has much to do with tho re
cent story of tho breaking off of the
engagement between Goodwin's lead
ing iiuiy, .miss cuna unouricn, ami a
Uoldficld millionaire, the surmise be
lng that Goodwin won out In his con
tinenlal chase and pursuit for the
heart of Miss Goodrich, and after he
has side-tracked Maxlne he will wed
his protry, leading lady.
That Goodwill's presoneo In Neva'
da as a mining promoter was his
method of establishing his residence
III order to comply with tho law in
filing his suit Is now presumed.

OF MR. BRYAN

Seattle, Sept. 23 A cable message
from Wrangel says that Captain
