FINED $25 FOR
VIOLATING NEW
ORDINANCE
Charles Kuthe, the well-known ci
gar dealer, appeared in the nollce
court this afternoon and was fined
" and costs by Acting Police JikIrp
Bryson upon a plea of guilty entered
by Mr. Kuthe for violating the non
intoxicant, or "near" beer ordinance
recently passed by the city council.
It Is the intention to Immediately car
ry the case to the circuit court by ha
beas corpus proceedings. There was
no intention to violate the law, as
before slated, it being agreed by the
dealers in the "near" beer to stand
arrest to test the ordinance In the
courts. J. M. Pipes is attorney for
Kuthe in this case.
Last night the office of three
j nianufaetui iiig institutions n' the

and drawers rifled, but there was
nothing of any great value taken
The thieves entered the r.innerv

windows and forced the lock at the
iron works. At the last named place
the safe, which Is kept uulockeii at
all times, was rifled and Mr. Fra
zer's papers scatered all over the
floor of the office, but nothiug was
missing. Neither did the thieves se
cure anything' at the office of the
excelsior mill, but at the cannery
they took something like tl.20 In
coin which had been left in the till
the office.
After being apprised Of (he bur

Farrington visited the hobo camp on
the river bank in the rear of Midg
ley's planing mill and found 14
knights of the tie route. He lined
them all up and searched each one.
but nothing of a suspicious nature
was found. They were all ordered
out of town, and as soon as they
could gather up their few belongings
they filed out of the camp and on
down the railroad toward .the limits
of the city.

Sheppard. and their servant, Jennie
Brady. The murders were commit
ted in the night and apparently were
without any definite motive. The
first victim was y.-s. Sheppard. who
was killed as she was warming milk
for her baby. The murderer shot
her three times and she died almost
Instantly. The husband was, shot as
is was coming downstairs to rescue
his wife. The servant girl met her
death -as she was trying to escape
from the house. After the triple
crime the youthful murderer went
to the house of a neighbor and told
him all were dead In the Sheppard
house. Zasteras the same afternoon
was taken Into custody because of
his conflicting statements, and after
his arrest a confession was soon ob
tained. During the period ho has
spent In jail he has displayed no con
cern over his probable fate and In
court he appeared smiling and unperturbed.

HOOST; DON'T KNOCK !
Eugene, Or., Sept. 21, '08.
The worst of the recent
panic is over, the empty din
ner pall will soon begin to
fill up. Let us all talk pros
perity and work Ifor pros
perity. Either Bryan or Tal't
will ie elected, and no matter
which one the majority of
the voters choose, times will
continue to get better. It
Is a moral crime to predict
a panic, for a panic means
poverty, bankruptcy, suicide
and untold suffering. Wo
have recently had enough of
It.
Let us not lay It onto any
Individual. A candidate for
office who will predict that
If the majority elect someone
else there will be a panic,
is not a patriot. A politician
or newspaper who will en
deavor to create a panic for
political reasons should be
punished as a criminal.
Let us all be patriots and
work for a return of pros
perity and it will make no
difference whether Bryan
or Taft Is elected. Boost !
