Wilbur Wright was shock-
ed by the accident to his
brothers aeroplane, which
resulted In the death of l.leu-
tenant Thomas Selfrldge, w ho
was sailing with him. and In
the breaking of several ribs
and the thigh of Wright, is
doing well at the hospital todav.
Tho propeller broke mld-alr. a
Piece of It Injuring the rudder so
that the machine was unmanageable.
Wright did his best to right matters
hut could not regain control and the
macnlno crashed to the ground, bury
ing tho two aeronauts 111 the debris.
Selfrldge died a few hours later
from nn Injury to the Bkull and lmi
of the brain. '
When the mnchlno fell soldiers
nnd spectators ran across the field to
where the aeroplane had fallen and
assisted In lifting Mr. Wright and
Lieutenant Selfrldge from under tho
tangled mass of machinery, rods,
wires nnd shreds of muslin. Mr.
Wright was conscjous and said:
"Oh. hurry and lift the motor."
lileutennnt Selfrldgo was uncon
scious. His head wns covered with
blood and he was choking when the
soldiers extricated him from under
machine.
Dr. Walters, a New York physi
cian, was one of the first to reach
Hie spot and rendered first aid to
the Injured men. When their woNjds
had been bandaged, Mr. Wright and
lileutennnt Selfrldge were taken to
Fort Myer Hospital at the other end
of the field. Mr. Wright lapsed Into
a stato of semi-consclousnessby the
lime he reached the hospital, but
Lieutenant Selfrldge did not regain
consciousness nt all.
