DEMOCRATIC1 CANDIDATE'
Rochester, X. Y., Sept. U.-The i -..ectlv
feeling of hope and confidence wHVorshlp.
Which tne democrats of .,w York
me campaign t'lis vear
is reflected 111 the spiri, of enthu
siasm that pervades Hwlies'er to
day on the-eve of the state conven
tion which Is to name candidates for
governor and oiher stale oficers to
be voted for at the Nowmiu-r elec
tion. The city already Is fillhiR with
"'w" visitors to me eonven-
tion, the unusually large number of're'vu llrol"lnent mention
eariy arrivals affording evidence in
Itself of the Interest and importance
mm auacnes to tne gathering this
year. The Indications are that the
convention will be one of the larg
est in point of attendance that Un
democratic party has ever held in
New York.
, The local arrangements for the
entertainment of the convention are
of . the most perfect and elaborate
character. When the convention
was given to Rochester the chamber
of commerce took up the work of
arranging the entertainment. Evi
dence of the successful accomplish
ment of Its work is to be seen on
all sides today. The downtown sec
tion of the city Is tastefully decora
ted. The chief feature of the decora
tive scheme consists of a number of
handsome arches spanning Main
street at the principal street intersec
tions. Business houses on both side.!
of the street are gayly decorated with
flags and bunting. Pictures of Mi van
and Kern are also promlcnt.
The announcement that Mr. Bryan
will address the convention Wednes
day naturally has had t;ie effect of
greatly Increasing the public inter
est in the gathering. The presid"n
tial candidate will be accompnnied
to the city by National Chairman
Mack and a nunibe- of other demo
cratic leaders of widest prominence.
The railroads nnd Inter urban lines
will run excursions into the city on
that day and large numbers of vl.sit
oi s are expected from ail parts of the
state.
So far as the work nf the conven
tion itself is concerned the interest
centers almost vh..',ly in the contest
for the head of the ticket. When the
convention is called to order,
cording to all present irtiieations, the
delegates will be as much in tne air
so far as the gubernatorial candidate
is concerned as they have been :oi
weeks past. True, the names of sev
eral of those who have been mev
tioned from time to time, such as Al
ton B. Parker and David B. 11.11,
hnvp been eliminated from the list,
but in the minds of r.U those whn
were well Informed as .o the s'tui-
tlon none of these ir.en has been ?e
rlously considered for ;i ncmlna
tlon. Leaders of tin virions faction
may get togethe- w.n'j the next

ARKANSAS KI.HCTIOX
KI.l-XTlOX IX ARKANSAS
Little Rock. Ark.. Sept. 14. Ar
kansas Is holding its biennial state
election today for state and county
officers and members of the legisla
ture. Comparatively little interest
Is manifested in the election, owing
to the certainty of success for all of
the democratic candidates. The re
publican vote of Arkansas never has
amounted to more than 35 per cent
of the total. This year the demo
crats expect to poll a larger vote
than ever before. This expectation
Is based on the popularity of George
W. Donaghey, the candidate for gov
ernor, and also on the fact that the
democratic vote In the primary last
March was the largest ever record
ed In this state. The republican
state ticket is headed by John I. Wor
tlilngton for. governor. Several of
the minor parties have tickets in the
field but this Is not expected to er
fect the results materially. The
state election, owing to the local Is
sues and existing conditions. Is re
garded as of little or no real value
as an aid in forecasting the general
results of the presidential contest
next November.

WILL MKKT AT SARATOGA
Saratogo, N. Y., Sept. 14. Doubt
as to the renomlnatlon of Governor
Charles E. Hughes faded away with
the assembling of the state conven
tion here today. The organization
of the convention is to be effected
at the initial session this evening and
the nomination of a state ticket and
the adoption of a platform will be
impeded with tomorrow. Ellhu
Root, secretary of state, will be tem
porary chalrrpan, and josepn 11,
Choate, former ambassador to Eng.
land, permanent chairman of the con.

While other candidates probably
will be sunnorted by their own 10
callties, there Is little evidence of any

notion of Governor Hughes. Mr.

and their friends, it Is said, may per
