l THIS COUNTY
in K. McAMSTKIl, CANDIDATE KOK
presidential elector, ad

at ki;e.ne and spiun(;field
iikvan ch iis formed
Hon. E. S. J. McAllister, Democrat
ic presidential elector, addressed a
large and appreciative audience In
tbe city square Saturday upon the
tariff and banking system.
This country -has been In control
of the tariff barons and special In
terests, fathered by the Republican
party, he said. .The paper trust paid
fl. 000. 000 into the Republican cam
paign fund In 1896, and the Republi
can party could not reduce the tar
iff on paper and pulp, aitnougn sucn
a reduction In the tariff was wanted
by all the newspapers In the country,
because they wore under obligations
to the paper trust for that compalgn
fund. The steel trust and other trusts
put large amounts of money Into the
Republican campaign fund and ex
pect to have the special privilege of
proving off the people.
Mr. McAllister Btuted that steel
rails and other protected articles paid
the freight and sold In foreign coun
tries cheaper than at home. He de
nied that a tariff ralBed the price of
labor, and gavo stutlstlcs that labor
had been raised 19 per cent on the
average since 1896, and that the cost
of living had been raised largely by
the tariff on the average 49 per cent.
The speaker also showed how the
greatest panic In the history of this
country had come under Republican
administration, and that 5,000,000
men had been thrown out of employ
ment, and that times were as hard
In the East now as they were In
1896.
Taking up the recent panic, Mr.
McAllister explained how that the
bankers In Wall street bad offered
large rates of Interest and that West
ern bankers had sent their money to
Wall street and that when the crash
came 4000 banks wore compelled to
take advantage of a public holiday
to keep from going to the wall.
He also slated that the Issuing or
clearing 'house certificates was clear
ly against the banking laws, and that
If the law had been enforced thoBe
iidlng clearing hotiso certificates
would have been prosecuted for coun
terfeiting and Bunt to tho peniten
tiary for a term of three yearB.
In conclusion ho appealed to his
audience to throw out the Bpeclnl In
terests from power and to put Che
government back Into tho hands of
the peoplo and to once more let the
people rule this nation.
