1 mit " r.,urd,i misiake the spirit of the peo-
le of Eugene If they even for a mo
ment consider seriously the sugges
tion of dropping the promotion pro
gram at the end of the present year.
Speaking of the promotion work
done the past year, who believes that
the Increased University appropria
tion would have carried had not the
people been aroused and thoroughly
organized through the efforts of the
Commercial Club. Hundreds of our
people appealed to friends through
out the state personally and by let
ter only because of the enthusiasm
engendered by the systematic "pull
together" 'movement "that 'has been
the real secret of all our successes of
the past year. The Portland business
men's excursion, the Shriners' con
clave and numerous other events that
have focussed attention upon Eu
gene and caused the spirit of the
people to infuse-enterprise Into neigh
boring towns may be credited to the
san'e source; no one citizen is re
sponsible for what has been done, but
the power of organization has 'been
recognized and the efforts of all have
caused a Portland paper to refer ed
itorially to Eugene's growth as a
"Marvel In City Building." Who is
there who desires to return to the
old order of disorganization?
There Is every reason to believe
that the sawmills will be generally
running within a few months. Ev
erything points that way, and when
the saws are all busy again Eugene
will experience a business activity
never before approached. Effort,
well-dlreoted : and persevering, has
done wonders while our mills are
Idle what may we not accomplish
when they are busy agaln?Let the
promotion work go on, more energet
ic ,lf possible, tban In the paBt, and
rest assured, with the plans now par
tially carried out and the most seri
ous obstacles already overcome, Eu
gene will grow and sxpand on a scale
that will astonish even the most san
guine believers in her future.
Connecticut is getting real chesty
since Mark Twain moved over from
New York, and if Mark can manage
to let that nutmeg chestnut alone
he may yet be nominated for road
commissioner, or something equally
as good. Mark's weakness for chest
nuts is so well known that we hard
ly dare hope for him.
A Tennessee upholder of the un
written law commends Captain Hains
for killing Annis, but tells him that
he violated the code by not publicly
charging him with the crime before
shooting, and that it is up to him to
commit suicide. That would be one
way out of the mess.
Again the technicality. The own
er of a swell apartment house had
one of his tenants arrested for vio
lating the clause In his lease which
prohibited the use, of phonographs In
the building, and the tenant proved
that it was a graphaphone. Next!

Nothing new has been learned dur
ing the past week regarding the re
port published to the effect that
Mack SommerviUe's death at Los An
geles was due to foul play. It is
quite certain nothing will develop
without strenuous steps on the part
of the attorney employed In the case.
To the people living there absolutely
no suspicion was aroused. It was not
until Tom Sonimervllle went down
from here and took a hurried inven
torv of his estate that things began
to look suspicious. Careful inquiry
led to plenty of grounds for surmis
ing all was not right in the case,
and the shortage in cash at least war
rants a thorough examination.

Advertisements, Like Clocks,
Should Keep Running;
A store's advertisements tell
the people what Is "doing'' at
that store what Is new, what
Is inviting, why today Is a good
time to visit the store. People
look for the ads to tell them
these things just im naturally as
they would look at a clock to
tell the time.
Sometimes a clock docs not
run sometimes a store's ad
does not run. A "run-down"
clock or ad are about equally
unsatisfactory, unserviceable,
mudiMidlng.
Curious thing about It Is that
a merchant who would thiuk It
absurd to have a run-down" or
out-of-reir clock will, some
times, deliberately let his ad
stop running. It a not wise, not
good business, nor defensible
on any known grounds but It
is sometimes done.
