dent of the Cottage Orove schools
last year, and who was elected to
serve In the Hame capacity for anoth
er year, tendered his resignation and
tbe board has elected as his succes
sor Professor K. K. Barnes, of Le
banon. Besides coming with the very
best credentials, it will be remember
ed that Professor Barnea' class car
ried off the honors In the state ora
torical contest last spring, the Asto
ria team being awarded second hon
ors. This alone speaks volumes for
the profesaor and demonstrates the
fact that he must be thorough and
is also said to be an enterprising, en
ergetic and most exemplary gentle
man, as well as a very proficient ed
ucator and the Leader welcome him
to our city. Professor Barnes has a
wife and one child, wbo will join the
professor here and make this city

F. W. A. Crain died at his resi
dence In Kast Pasadena, Cal Sep
tember 7. 1908, aged 80 years, 10
months and 2 days, of paralysis.

health, he was a resident of Junction
City since 1890. Ho also resided In
Kugene a number ot years. He wa.i
a minister of the gospel of the Meth
odist faith, although never In charge
of a church,
For the past 25 years he has bejn
a sufferer from rheumatism, whlcu
made him almost an Invalid during
that time.
Ho conducted a Jewelry store at
this place since 1 890, but had to re
tire on account or railing health.
He contributed articles to a num
ber of church papers and other peri
odicals, and a poem, "God Dless Ore
gon," was widely published.
lie Is survived by Mrs. Craln and
daughter Anna. They hnvo the sym
pathy of their legion of friends In
